Title: Converted XML2 Skins Galore
Post by: durfal on December 28, 2006, 08:06AM
After trying to get them from others which didn't work. There was no other option then to do my noobie modding best to get them myself.
It took me half a day to get through the proces of what it was I had to do. And it was much more complex then you think (expert modders will LOL by my experiences but it was all new for me  :P).

If you don't care how I made these or got them go to the bottom of the post and you find the place to dl the lot!!! 8) ;) :'(

But I couldn't have done without the programs made by: Nba2kstuff. His programs are great, if you get the hang on it. Even if they didn't do the job completely the way I wanted. But that is over 'cause I figured it all out now.

The problem is they can't be directly imported from XML2 because the collor scheme is wrong. BGR (Blue/Green/Red) in stead of the standard RGB in which the XML2 skins are.
So first I had to learn how the Texture finder (one of nba2kstuff's programs)works, and what the #€!! I was looking for in the first place. (and that most XML2 skins are in dxt3 and most MUA in dxt1, wherehence the black spot problems came from, now I understand that too Tommy ;))

After locating the art in the Skin files (search and write down the location of the 256x256,128x128 and the 64x64 art files)from the actor map with this program , you have to extract the biggest art file (sometimes like with Angel there were seperate art files for his costume and for his wings, then both)from the file. They made fractured smaller images from one bigger file mostly. The big one 256x256 sized (mostly in MUA the big one is 512x512 thats why the MUA files are bigger!) you have to extract with nba2kstuff's "muaskinner" (another great program which took me hours to understand).

OK small thing in between I found out about the sizes. Nba2kstuff said I only needed the big one to convirt, because the smaller are for testing perposes. Maybe with the MUA files (haven't tried that) but not with the XML2 files that is most certainly not correct!. The program selects which sized skin of the ones available he uses in certain situations. In the character select screen it uses for the body, arms, legs and the front of the face the 256x256 file, But for the sides and back of the had the smaller 128x128 file already. In game when zoomed in the body stays 256x256 but the arms/legs and head complete come out the 128x128 version. Zoomed out even 64x64 has influince on the color scheme. (I found this out during importing the art back into the skin files)

In his instructions he didn't know if his instructions would also work for XML2 files. And the awnser is yes and no (see above and later more about that).
First I had to put the exact location of the file you want to extract in the "muaskinner.cfg" file. But I had to find out how by myself. You have to open that file with a texteditor (wordpad from windows works fine) and begin with the name of the file the dxt (dxt3 in these cases) the size of the file (256x256 mostly) and the exact point the art starts from found with the above mentioned texturefinder.
All seperated with commas and the line ends with a dot. This has to be verry exact otherwise the muaskinner program won't work (even if the letters are written in capitals or not and even for the .igb or .IGB like I found out, must all be exact the same). The file you want to extract the art out must be together were you run the muaskinner from.
You extract the art file (the biggest) as dds file (but you could also extract them as bmp I believe but I didn't try that). If all worked exactly like it shouls I still/always got a message to put the "dev in". But if you got the dds file you can ignore it. Then I opened the dds file in "Photoshop" (for which you need a dds plugin but luckaly for me I got that one already ( ;D ??? ;D)). I use 7.0 , mybe the following is different in other versions.
The rest i had to figure out myself. Because now I had the art but I had to reverse the colorscheme. Also I'm not a photoshop wizard so it took me while again to work that out.
After the file opened in Photoshop go to the third tab on top named Image and from there open Adjustments and then "Channel Mixer". You then get a new small window with opens with scheme for red, on there put red to "0" and Blue to "100". push Ctr+3 and you get the scheme for blue on which you have to it the other way around (red to 100 and blue to 0) push OK (leave the settings for green alone) and you have a verry strange colored picture. (So if you want to reskin an xml2 file you do that before you this color thing, if using a MUA skin you first have to put the colors back in the correct order then reskin and then put the color settings back)
After doing that you go to "save as", another window opens how you want to save this dds file. Which bewildered me the first time with all the possibilities. Save as dxt3 (at the top) and with 1 MIP (and not like in nba2kstuf's advice with 6! (later on why). After saving this file (and naming it differently then correct colorscheme version you already have!) you go back to the dds file loaded in Photoshop. Go to Image again and pick "Image size" it stands on the size of the picture (mostly 256 long and 256 wide) and make them now both 128 and execute, save that one too (again named different) and repeat it for the 64x64.

OK so now you have the original color scheme dds 256x256 and three with the new color scheme (256x256/128x128 and 64x64). You don't need the correct colored dds file anymore but I mostly kept it until I imported the files and tested the skin in game. Just rename it !

OK before importing files make sure the file you are importing the new stuff into is a copy and the original is secured if things first go wrong!!!!!!!!!
In his instructions nba2kstuff said that if you write the exact locations of the 256x256, 128x128 etc. after each other in the muaskinner.cfg file it would import them all in ones. (the reason he said to save them with 6 MIP's) Unfortunately that doesn't work for the XML2 skin files (probably it does with the MUA skins I haven't tried that)
That's why you have to import them back in seperately!  :-\.
So in the muaskinner.cfg file still stands the location for the 256x256 file so I put those first back in. Rename the dds file 256x256 with the strange color scheme to the name the one with the correct color schem had before!
probably something like "0000.IGB.dds" (zeros are the numbers of the skin you used)
And use the rest of the instructions like written by nba2kstuff to import it with MUASKINNER.
After doing this go back to the muaskinner.cfg and overwrite for the location of the 256 file with that of the 128x128 artfile! and repeat the importing and then again for the 64x64 artfile.
After importing you get a .bak file of the original skinfile and the skinfile is updated (watch if the time changes when last changed!, sometimes you get a .bak file but the skinfile doesn't change if you did something wrong (mostly by incorrect renaming files and/or if in the muasskinner.cfg file something is wrong).

Now test the new skin in game. Just replace a skin of one of your characters with the newly made one. And go in game to this character and change (if you have too) to this skin! If everything is correct you have converted a skin (or a reskinned one).

Unfortunately by converting the skins I had to keep the original dxt3 colorcoding (don't know exactly what it is) and couldn't save them as dxt1 like the rest of the original skins (tried it 'cause that worked for Tommy's skins, but didn't work. It didn't crash the game but your characters had the most wild colors everywhere).
So here and there are still some small black spotson some skins. Strangely most on the ladies for some reason ??? ??? ???. But on most skins they are neglectable. Only on the Scarlet Witch and Emma Frost the most notable.

Most skins come directly from XML2and found even a few that weren't used n game for gambit and forge for example.
And I added a few of the great  ;D reskinning done for XML2, made by Tetragene, kinstryfe, wil1142, and Youngblood0000 and Darkmythology. Of which most come here on this board to I believe.
So I didn't make any of these skins myself, I just converted them to be used in MUA. :P

I made a big load of skins for everyone who wants them. Just rename them to a skin you would like to replace in MUA. Or you can use them in mods (the reason I added two Cyclops skins ;) in here) For obvious reasons they are mostly mutants and friends. I'm proud on the (arch)Angel skins in particulair he looks spectaculair with his wings in MUA.

The ones with * where reskins made by the guys named above. (on this site you can see who made which one http://drath.explodehost.com/gamersjournal/rpg/pc/xmenlegends2/skins.php (http://drath.explodehost.com/gamersjournal/rpg/pc/xmenlegends2/skins.php)
In the file are Angel, Archangel, Beast, Bishop, Blink, Cannonball(*), Cyclops 2x, Dazzler 4x (*3x), Emma Frost, Forge 2x, Gambit 2x, Guardian, Havok, Juggernaut, Mimic (*), Morph (*), Northstar (*), Polaris, Quicksilver, Rogue, Sabertooth, Scarlet Witch 3x, Shadowcat 2x (1*) and Sunfire 2x.
And it took me a while (hours) to convert them. I'll probably do more (like profX, Pyro, Magneto and Mystique) but this is it for now. I put my attention mostly on other characters who haven't gotten any skins already in MUA like Nightcrawler and Jean have.

I'm actually toying around with XML1-only characters, like Magma, Marrow and Psylocke for the model conversions. Had to take'em from the X-Box version of the game since it uses the same formats as the PC one -- and, of course, the X-Box being what it is, most of the textures are indecently low-res (128x and lower as the HIGHEST size available, with small exclusions like Marrow or separate 128x head textures like Emma Frost).

When (if?) I'm done playing with those, I might also up them for everyone's enjoyment. Till then... Keep wishing :D

woohooo a juggernaut skin! ;D  Thanks for this.

Can you take a couple screenshots so I can throw this on the main page?

I can't remember, but is Iron Man's armor different in XML2 than any of the armors in MUA? That skin would rock, giving people an option of adding a different armor!

Can you post exactly which skins you converted? Because I was doing some myself, and there is no point in doing the same skin 2x.

I wish I could but for some strange reason they all show up on photo's as big white holes. As if someone has cut them out of the picture.

Probably has something to do with the dxt3 they are saved in, but I haven't got a foggiest idea why. I tried it again from the character selection screen, But everyone has abeautiful white silouette on the pictures.

OK sometimes I don't know the original names but here it goes. (I leave the ones who have only 1 skin and the reskinnings out of this)
Bishop, the bald one.
Cyclops, The Ultimate and the full blue one with two yellow lines.
Gambit, the modern one and one that wasn't used in game for some obscure reason ???.
Juggernaut , the traditional one , Brwown with helmet.
Rogue the most tradional one, Green, Yellow with the Black Leathercoat.
Sabretooth the Age of Apocalypse or Exiles one.
Scarlet Witch all three!
Sunfire the Traditional and the Age of Apocalypse one.

But I'm gonna make more of them though. Which ones are you working on?

Did you use a screen grabber program, the Print Screen key or the in-game screenshooter (F11 by default)? Each has different results under different conditions :D

I've done Cylops' classic blue uniform and Beast's original. I'm going to do Sabretooth's other two costumes, AoA Gambit, Rogue's other two costumes, and Magneto's three costumes. Should have them done tomorrow or the day after.

I only tied the in game F11 one. Gonna try the Print Screen one and see if that gives better results :)
Thanks for the advice.

Welcome to my world. It took me like 6 hours to convert my first skin and I kept screwing it up and crashing the game. When I finally got one to work, it had black spots all over the place (DXT3 instead of DXT1 thingy). :o

I can now find the offsets and convert the skins in like half an hour tops, using texture finder, photoshop, and of course a hex-editor since muaskinner doesn't work for me.

PS: I freakin love you man.

Next Charlie Murphy project - a Gambit movelist with explosion effects of MUA.

Man sorry to hear you can't get MUASKINNER to work. Like I said in my first post it took me the longest time to figure that program out, and everything has to be perfect. But now it works perfectly. everything takes now 15 min. Including the texture finding.
PS: You do know that you have to use the dosprompt to work with it don't you? and not the window that opens if you push the muaskinner.exe

Furthermore I made some pictures with the print Screen button like Noelemahc sugested.

OK I made some sugestions for who the skins to use on.

Some did fit in perfectly others I had to go on a stretch but some powers weren't represented in game.

So far I used the following skins for which character:
Sunfire - the Human Torch (his 3rth skin is perfect for the Aoa one)
Scarlet Witch (and Namor MUA skin)- dr. Strange (the male voice is weird fotr the witch but Dr. Strange has essentialy a lot of her XML2 powers)
Shadowcat - Elektra (phasing is impossible but she got the ninja training too)
Rogue and Dazzler - Ms. Marvel
Angel, Archangel and Guardian - Iron Man (kept only his original skin)
Polaris, Emma Frost (and Jean but her skin is already in game) - Invisible Woman (only the ultimate I kept)
Juggernaut (and the Hulk from Tommy) - Luke Cage
Gambit - Moon Knight
Havok - Captain Marvel (also kept 1 Silver Surfer skin which I replaced him with)
Beast - Black Panther
Sabretooth - Wolverine (It only shrinks him a bit, because Wolverine is a smaller character)
Nightcrawler (already in game) and maybe Blink - Deadpool (because of teleporting)
Bishop - Blade (would have been perfect for Fury , but I replaced him already with the Black Widow)
Iron Fist (tommy's), Wong (in game) and Quicksilver - Ronin (Gave her a male voice too, because I use her for Iron Fist mostly),Quicksilver is a stretch but I don't know who to give the skin otherwise.
Mystique (not done yet) - Black Widow
Leaves me still with the following: Northstar, Canonball, Magneto (to do) and Prof X (to do)
Cyclops skins are for the mod made but I don't want to loose Iceman so I have to replace the character with someone else. (probably Blade)

You got other sugestions?

Uh, Hey guys. I'm a Noob here. :-\ just a few questions about this. I've been trying to find the correct offsets using texture finder like you did earlier in the thread, but the problem is that some of the textures seem to start in the middle of a line, and from what i've observed, texture finder only delivers the offset from the start of the current line. I tried doing a rough job using these offsets, but when I import the textures again, they import, but they repeat themselves a few times.. it's qute strange. but anyway.. how exactly do I get the perfect offsets?

cheers

Title: Re: Converted XML2 Skins Galore
Post by: Charlie_Murphy on December 29, 2006, 12:47AM

Lines? Offset = position in the file (in bytes). Offset = 100 means the 100th byte. The texture can start at any "line" depending on the display width and current offset position...

Anyway ... when you think you have the texture in the top left corner of the texture finder, use that offset as a GUIDE. It is impossible to judge visually.

Open the file in a hex-editor and go to the offset you think is right (from texture-finder).

You should be able to find the exact starting position of the DDS (image) by looking at the byte values. Go back to texture finder, type that offset, and save the image.

Here is an example of an X-men Legends 2 IGB file opened in a hex editor, with the cursor at the offset of the 256x256 texture:

QuoteIt is impossible to judge visually.

Which is exactly what I was trying to do for some reason. I'll give it a shot with the hex editor maybe. :P

I should know better than that. sigh.

thanks. I'll see how it goes.

Ackshually, that's what the offset slider is for in Texture Finder. The one to the right of the size thinger. Manipulate it to do offsets until the picture matches up perfectly in the preview window, then you can get the offset for it. Savvy? [/Jack Sparrow moment]

Just for the record... I always get my offsets via Texture Finder that way -- and, save for the Charlie-Foxtrot with Moon Knight's portraits, it worked very well so far.

I tried a couple skins and then popped them open in texturefinder. It looks like the 256, 128, and 64x64 graphics were changed, but not the 32x32 and 16x16 graphics, leading the the blue blurring on my graphics card. I replaced the last two squares myself, and the blur went away. So that's likely the problem, not all the textures have been reverse-paletted.

:-[Sorry guys but during my testing no blue came anywhere during gameplay. I tried lower resolution settings (I use 1280-1054) 1024-768 Nothing Blue, 800-600 Almost undetectable and only when completely zoomed out, 640-400 here the blue apeared. Didn´t know people still used those low resolutions or is it a graphic card thing?

Cause during my tests I found that I only needed to convert back to the 64x64. That one still had some influence (on my graphic card aparently) when I completely zoomed out. That's the reason I didn't do the 32x32 and 16x16 ones. On only 2 skins I did the 32x32 (Angel was 1 I think) because the biggest skin was only 128x128 in that file.

As you see in the pics, no blue came up anywhere for me. I was more worried about the black spot thing.
But aparently on different machines with different graphic cards things look different. Like the advanced shadow settings which I can't adjust with my graphic card.

There is a free program I use called irfanview it can reverse the  pallet of the skin with the click of a button   [ Image >  Swap colors >  RGB= BGR and vs versa ] comes in real handy it can't save as .dds but you could use it to prepare the skin before and after editing before saving as .dds out of photoshop. If the color mixer isn't your thing then this will help, or if you just want something simple in modding for once ;)  just save out as a .TGA or .bmp then finish the job in Photoshop can also be used as a screen cap util

get it here : http://www.irfanview.com/

I also use  xnview also free and powerful it can save out as .dds but appears to corrupt the .dds images unfortunitly.
However It Also has the same colour swap function as  irfanview [ Image >  Swap >  RGB= BGR and vs versa ]and can read / write many, many image formats as well as play video files. It's  great to use to open even multi layer .psd's  without the ram overhead of photoshop if your just browsing, it has decent image editing tools too, batch conversions, slide show  ect.. not bad for free :)

Photoshop is still the real powerhouse for image editing though.

get it here : http://www.xnview.com/

I hope these apps help I'm a digital artist and Photoshop is my baby, but setting either of these to be your windows default image viewer can really help on a daily basis, when  opening / browsing .dds' or .tga's  even .Max files that windows fax viewer can't. It also functions as windows explorer with thumbnail view. I don't leave home without them ;D

nice work durfal!
i been gone for the week, but back for a bit. im a little busy, but checking in to help as i can.
the muaskinner program is very experimental and prototype. i'll add more into it and make it easier to use as i get soem feedback on its glicthes and features that would be good for it to make teh skinning process easier.
would you be willing to share your muaskinner.cfg file and i'll add it into a later version to help everyone else?
i'll try to add some gui for it later once it's more debugged and useful.

thanks again and great work, durfal and all!

3 New Skins: AoA Rogue, AoA Jean, Ultimate Magneto (No Helmet)

Problems: Mags' cape is surrounded by a white line ??? And when fullscreen effects are off, Rogue has black spots. Don't know why, as I mapped all the way down to the 16.

Ultimate Toad (Blue) & Ultimate Toad (Brown)

Again, they have black spots if fullscreen effects are off. This is due to the dxt3 textures. However they will not have blue lines, as all 6 I have made are defined all the way to the 16x16 texture. Some of durfal's are not, so they may have them.

is there any chance you could do the sabretooth AoA down to the 16 as well. I know it takes time but my graphic abilities are quite limited. thanks for the skins.

I'll try to get to it tomorrow. I just finished modern Pyro, but no more onesy releases. I'll release him in a multipack tomorrow.

If durfal could post how far down the line he went with each individual skin, I would be willing to get the small portions done on most (maybe all) of the ones he did. It will, as you said, take time, though.

That would be awesome, I am working on making a weapon x team and I really dont have any way to do that sort of thing on my laptop.

So, did you convert the XML2 portraits too (the dialogue iconses) or should someone (::)) make some? I've got art for most of those that can be styled to fit in with MUA's style, so, while I'm still on the horse...
Title: Re: Converted XML2 Skins Galore
Post by: BliZZ on January 01, 2007, 08:48AM
I CAN convert them. Did I? No.

The problem is most XML2 stuff is dxt3, so there will be black spots. Plus, they won't be in the same style (with the metal background).

For now, I have a lot more skins to convert. When I'm done, I'll see what I can do. (That is, if you haven't done it already ;D)

QuoteThe problem is most XML2 stuff is dxt3, so there will be black spots. Plus, they won't be in the same style (with the metal background).
Let me paraphrase my question then.
1. ARE you going to convert the XML2 portraits or make new ones that fit the MUA style, or you're not going to do anything? (Correct answer: "Not going to do anything")
2. Would you mind if I started making MUA-styled (256x DXT1 with the fraggin' metal grating background) pics of all of these? (Correct answer: "No, of course not, I would love it if you made some")

:D

Already scribbled it out from what you posted, after downloading ones I was not sure about. I'm certain I have art to base pics on for at least half the list. Gotta check that mess I call my "dump everything comic-related in here" folder.
Some of these are easy (Apocalypse's design is the same for all of Earth 616, so that one is not a hard moment); some are harder (AoA Rogue portrayed in XML2 is actually Young AoA Rogue -- the Mature AoA Rogue wears her vintage all-green 'villain' costume she recently donned again in 616 after the Sunfire affair), some border on psychotically impossible (as AoA Nightcrawler, for example, exists mostly in an exaggerated cartoonish style).

QuoteHere's an update.
Captain Marvel's classic (20203), Iron Fist, and two for the XML2 projekt, featuring Modern Gambit and AoA Cyclops. Yay.
http://h1.ripway.com/ivank/Portraiture4.rar
Of these, only Cyke is based on comic art ("Tales from AoA feat. Factor X"), the other three are from the busts and statues pics on the site Kenn suggested.

Procured art for Modern Mystique, almost every AoA playable, several variations of Sabertooth and all the not-available-in-MUA permutations of Wolverine. Gonna make all of those next. Yup.

Here's the new stuff (10 pcs), all from the AoA.
http://h1.ripway.com/ivank/PortraitureAoA1.rar
Includes:
*Bishop -- in all of his bald glory -- back in the days when we were used to a hairier Bishop, it was weird-looking
*Colossus -- and his attempts at channeling Iron Fist
*Gambit -- ever the dashing rogue
*Jean Grey -- with the funky hairdo and tattooage
*Magneto -- without helmet, can be used for the Helmetless Magneto skin (even though it's Ultimate)
*Nightcrawler -- agree with me, "Kurt Darkholme" sounds very... unfamiliar, neh?
*Rogue -- again, sounds weird enough -- "Anna Lensherr"
*Sabertooth -- and his fancy-shmancy sneer
*Storm -- Quicksilver's sweetheart, complete with HER fancy eye tattoo
And, last but not least... you got it,
*Weapon X -- or Wolverine for those of you from Earth 616 who don't know that in the AoA (which, by the way, does NOT have a number) the name Wolverine is borne by another person entirely).

Enjoi.

I'm actually toying around with XML1-only characters, like Magma, Marrow and Psylocke for the model conversions. Had to take'em from the X-Box version of the game since it uses the same formats as the PC one -- and, of course, the X-Box being what it is, most of the textures are indecently low-res (128x and lower as the HIGHEST size available, with small exclusions like Marrow or separate 128x head textures like Emma Frost)

Don't know how I missed this post :P Are most/all character models accessible? Including the dropped from XML2 Avalanche, Jubilee, Madrox and Ultimate Iceman?

Also, would one need a modded X-Box to do this? (after some searching, i've come up conflicting answers)
Title: Re: Converted XML2 Skins Galore
Post by: Noelemahc on January 05, 2007, 11:55PM
All characters are accessible, even the dropped ones (good thing they've kept Uncanny Marrow and not AoA Marrow or Weapon X Marrow as the choice; that's her only non-ugly form), just gotta tapdance quite a bit to get some of them working in MUA without crashing it (which is weird, as they ALL work in XML2 without problems).
And I can't reply to the modded question as I snagged the disc image from the Interweb (it's wonderful to have such conflicting copyright* laws in my country => you aren't considered as breaking the law with it until you use it (which I'm not, I ain't got a Box) or sell it (which I'm not)) and tore its assetsfb.wad out.
Did you have any requests for me? :P

Yeah, I REALLY want Ultimate Iceman (Iced up). I always found it odd that they slowly made him less Ultimate and more Classic (XML1-hat/armband, XML2-armband, MUA-neither) instead of just having them as 2 separate costumes.

Okay, here's a mission for ya, Blizz. You gotta convert the Spacesuit and Gladiator costumes as well (available, to my memory, in XML2, for Colossus, Wolverine, Storm and Nightcrawler -- in XML1, almost every playable has one or the other). At least for the sake of their having higher-res textures than the ones I can access in XML1 :P That, and they're neat-looking.

Already half there- Wolvy and Storm's were already in MUA. I'll do the rest though. And, FYI, EVERY playable costume from XML1 is in XML2, except for Emma's, Magma's, Jubi's, and Betsy's. Yes, even Beast's.

I checked, turns out what XML1 lists as Logan's "Dopple", or Gladiator costume is listed in XML2 under "Ultimate Predator". Yup, THAT's the one. So, it's off my list as of now.

I'm also gonna have a bit of fun comparing the formatting in the PSP version of XML2 to the PC ones, mayhap I will find a key to deciphering the format differences after all. *slaps forehead* Fic me silly. That's the cel shading outline for XML2's shaders use. If you take a gander inside the model file, it's the series of boltons labeled <body part name>_outline. I'm surprised you didn't get'em with other conversions, actually.

Nope, not really. They ARE black in XML2, so why in the heck would they suddenly become white eludes me. Maybe look for unusual white spots in the files when viewed via Texture Finder? I'm certain there's lots of those, they're present almost in every XML model.

Yep, I already acknowledged that. They all will, with full screen lighting off. It is because of the dxt3 textures/the alpha channel.

Let us continue.
Six more AoA portraits.
http://h1.ripway.com/ivank/PortraitureAoA2.rar
In here, you shall find:
AoA Blink, fixed AoA Colossus, Dark Beast, AoA Magneto (helmeted this time around), AoA Sunfire and AoA Toad.
This moves it on up, leaving just a few AoA characters uncovered. The next batch will focus on 616ers.

Hey Noelemahc, I've a small request - any chance you could convert Storm's "original" (circa Giant Size #1) portrait? The skin is already in MUA of course, but the portrait isn't...

Thanks!

It must have something to do with the switch between fire torch and regular torch. Does the same happen when flying/landing?
Title: Re: Converted XML2 Skins Galore
Post by: rainy_de_lunche on January 20, 2007, 12:29PM
it did for me...y elektra though personally i didnt care too much for sunfire but it was quite a surprise.
Title: Re: Converted XML2 Skins Galore
Post by: SmokeBogey on January 20, 2007, 12:36PM
Thats because the script for changing to the flying skin and back looks inside the igb you're using for its number, and Elektra and Sunfire both happen to be 1201.igb.  Open the Sunfire igb in a hex (sorry, I said text at first) editor and replace all 120x.igb with 130x (if you are replacing torchy's third skin with sunny's first, replace 1201 with 1303), and you should be fine.

Hi, has anyone tried converting the Mr. Sinister skin from XML2?
Is the cape(ribbons) a seperate model from the body? It seems like it didn't show up on mine... :(
Is there anyway to "fuse" the cape with the body? ???

Thanks...!

Nope, they aren't a separate model. At least as far as XML2 is concerned (check: decompile NPCSTAT of XML2 and see for yourself). Are they even IN the model? I don't remember, sorry >.<

That's the Heroes Reborn Sean Chen armor -- which was a modern armor designed to evoke the styling of the MK III armor.  I've currently got this armor installed along with Tommyboy's Avengers Mod -- EXCELLENT add-on, especially for Iron Man fans.  MANY thanks!

Classic Selene, the Black Queen; and a Classic Hellfire Club Emma Frost skin based on it I have from back in the XML2 days. I wish I remember who did it, so I could credit them. But I don't, so just know I simply converted it, I didn't make it.

Omega won't work for Mr Fan as his coils aren't part of his model, and Mr Fan's anims expect that they are. In other words, it won't be as you probably intend it to be, his arms will stretch, not the coils. It'll look st00pid :D
Me, I'd rather slave over adapting Omega's XML2 skeleton into playability, which is why I'm so hot on the issue of finding a way to use two skeletons at once :D

Ah'm back.

I was bored, so here's the result of it :D
http://h1.ripway.com/ivank/XML2/XML2Baddies.rar

Included in the pack are MUA-ed versions of the XML2 models 6701.igb (with textures from 6701 to 6705), 8301.igb and 8402.igb (with textures from 8401 to 8405). Skeleton tags "Shifter", "Mutant Mix" and "Optic Crawler" :D
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v26/ivan_k/Marvel/MUA/Shifters.jpg)
And, just for the fic of it, how the raw, unconverted, Shifters look in MUA (look at #4 -- Battle Blink, anyone?):

The multiple models were identical (although differently formatted, they shared the geometry and texture shapes, so I took the liberty of dumping the largest texture mips from each and then inserted them into ONE of the models), so the offsets within one set are identical. Note that Crawler1 actually had only a 128x mip, which had to be upsampled to the 256x the others use. Ouchie.
Offsets:
Crawler1.igb,-DXT3,256,256,67913,128,128,51529,64,64,23961,32,32,32125,16,16,31853,8,8,31774.
MutantMix.igb,-DXT3,256,256,60551,128,128,22979,64,64,144423,32,32,156019,16,16,44027,8,8,44283,4,4,157043.
Shifter1.igb,-DXT3,256,256,82129,128,128,20573,64,64,36957,32,32,41053,16,16,42077,8,8,45829,4,4,45909.

These are obviously fun alternate skins for Mystique, Nightcrawler (swordless, though) and Colossus. Excelsior!

P.S. You can get Moira McT off your lists, BliZZ, because I converted her XML1 version, which is identical to the XML2 in all respects but the fact that the PS2 version needs not conversion :P

Eventually, when we are both done with our respective skins, is the plan to release 'Blizz and Noel's Skin Mega Pack - Every Skin from XML1 and XML2'? Just think how sweet (and large) that would be. :D

Yeah, that's the general idea. We still have a long way to go though -- I sifted through the various demons and found out, much to my chagrin, that none of the XML1 ones seem to be present in XML2 :D

Good thing almost all of the robots did get carried over, so I'll soon join you in working on XML2 alone.

There's no shame in that, I did the same for Classic/Modern Juggs and Blue/Brown Ultimate Toad :P

Also, I can't download your baddie pack. ??? This comes up: "The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process."

Once I have it, I'll have collected all skins currently done, and I'll get back to work on the final bosses soes we can finish it up.

13 - Gambit -- all skins done
14 - Blink -- the only skin is done
15 - Iron Man -- the only non-MUA skin is done
16 - Banshee -- the only skin is done
17 - Destiny -- the only skin is done
18 - Bishop -- somehow has one skin listed twice in converted skins (classic and uncanny) -- WTF?
19 - Havok -- the only skin is done
20 - Shadowcat -- ditto
21 - Moira -- is done in XML1 pack
22 - Forge -- second skin needs doing! 2202.igb
23 - Ultimate Predator AKA Gladiator Wolverine -- the only skin is done
24 - Scarlet Witch -- all skins are done
25 - Magneto -- all skins are done
26 - Ka-Zar -- the only skin is done
27 - Shanna the She-Devil -- the only skin is done
28 - Mystique -- the only XML2 skin is done
29 - Sabretooth -- all skins are done
30 - Blob -- both skins are done
31 - James Hudson -- the only skin is done (anyone up for making his eye-dazzling Mutant X skin?)
32 - Heather Hudson -- the only skin is done (I'm almost afraid to ask if anyone can make her eXiles skin)
33 - Toad -- Gladiator Skin still needs doing! 3322.igb
34 - Juggernaut -- all skins are done
37 - Stepford Cuckoos -- the only skin is done (anyone up for making all the alternate costumes seen throughout Planet X and Phoenix Warsong?)
38 - Grizzly -- the only skin is done
39 - Sugarman -- the only skin is done
40 - Abyss -- is not done yet! 4001.igb and its dependants
41 - Apocalypse -- the only skin is done
42 - Bastion -- ditto
43 - Living Monolith -- same here
44 - Deadpool -- the only non-MUA skin is done
46 - Holocaust -- the only skin is done
47 - Mikhail -- the only skin is done
48 - Sinister -- is not done at all! (N.B. XML2 only has his AoA skin -- is anyone up for making the 616 version?) 4801.igb
49 - Omega Red -- is not done at all! 4901.igb
50 - Stryfe -- is not done at all! 5001.igb
90 - Emma Frost -- Space suit done in XML1 pack, the only XML2 suit is done. Plus the Classic custom, of course :D
100 - Sebastian Shaw -- the only skin is done
101 - Selene -- the only skin is done
103 - Polaris -- the only skin is done (and we might benefit from all the other skins of her besides the Dark Seduction one she's got in here)
104 - Quicksilver -- the only skin is done
105 - Zealot -- the only skin is done
106 - Lady Deathstryke -- is not done at all! 10601.igb
107 - Garokk -- is not done at all! 10701.igb
108 - Sauron -- the only skin is done
109 - Angel -- done along with the other entry
110 - Dazzler -- the only skin is done (now we need the other five variants she's worn...)
114 - Pyro -- both skins are done
115 - Cable -- has no skins in XML2PC
116 - Tony Stark -- has a better skin in MUA

The rest are either critters or duplicates. So there!
Correct me if I'm wrong about any skins I declared missing, I went on from the directory listing to which I dumped all of BliZZ's releases and does not include ones from Durfal's original pack.

Critters:
Only codes 67 (Shifter), 83 (Mutant Mix) and 84 (Optic Crawler) are done. Yeah.
93 - Sentinel -- should be compared to the MUA version and only the non-same ones converted. Yeah.

05 - Beast -- all skins done, Space skin in my XML1 pack
Actually, original Beast is also a product of you, the only one *I* did was Ultimate
Quote11 - Professor X -- needs Gladiator and Classic Skin to be done! 1105.igb and 1102.igb (because only 1110.igb and 1104.igb got converted!)
Correct me if I'm wrong, but is not Classic in MUA?
Quote18 - Bishop -- somehow has one skin listed twice in converted skins (classic and uncanny) -- WTF?
Trust me, all Bishops are done. I was working on a mod for him, no? This is a product of my renaming previous skins after I finished later ones. Much like the Nightcrawler I HAD labeled as 'Uncanny' is now 'Modern', and the XML1 is 'Uncanny' :P
Quote33 - Toad -- Gladiator Skin still needs doing! 3322.igb
I didn't realize he had a Gladiator costume. Damn. So its 9 skins left then.
Quote40 - Abyss -- is not done yet! 4001.igb and its dependants
I'm almost afraid to do him, what with all the body parts stored as separate models. He'll be dead last.

The rest is the same as I have it. Oh, and on the note of customs, I released some of them along the way, but I won't put em in our big pack. That should be officials only. I have a LOT more than what I posted (most of them NOT done by me :P)

QuoteCorrect me if I'm wrong, but is not Classic in MUA?
The more important question is if the MUA model separatable from the wheelchair or not :D Check it please, will ya? :P
Because there are TWO versions of it in XML2, and one is bolted to the wheelchair much like that comatose Ilyana from XML1 was bolted to her blanket :D
EDIT: Yep, I checked, it's bolted to the chair. Be a dear and add the non-crippled Xavier to your list, will you? :P

Okay, here we go again -- I decided to skip the GAAP Standards lectures and instead bring you the Madri and the Anubites!

Left to right is #1 to #5; top to bottom is: Anubite Greater, Anubite, Madri Priest, Madri High Priest.
Again with the same-texture trick, this time based off 5101.igb, 5201.igb, 7401.igb and 7502.igb.
Offsets: Anubite1.igb,-DXT3,256,256,87607,128,128,57479,64,64,73863,32,32,52523,16,16,53563,8,8,47531,4,4,53547.

That takes care of codes 51, 52, 74 and 75.

P.S. Ahhh, the Madri. The only enemies of XML2 for whom it was justified by the storyline to look alike as they're all runaway dupes of a nigh-catatonic Madrox -- hence their name. Note that Civil War Files, that pretense at a guide to "who's on whose side", claims the plural to Madrox is Madroi, not Madri. Can't they make their bloody minds up?

Gladiator Toad was going to be the 4th, but I messed up one of the offsets and got a jumbled mess (as you can see on the left). He'll come in the next pack.

Left to right, yet again, is 1 to 5. Top to bottom is: Morlock Bruisers, Morlock Claws, Morlock Psionics, Zealot's Minions. Please note that apparently the brighest of the Morlocks got left in XML1 as the ones that didn't make it into XML2 had more colours than drab green, dran brown and doubtfully blue :D

Offsets:MorlockBruiser1.igb,-DXT3,256,256,49277,128,128,31869,64,64,19685,32,32,48253,16,16,26949,8,8,23781,4,4,23845.

Also, the Ripway link to the first baddie pack is now fixed.

That takes care of character codes 80, 81, 82 and 117. I've taken the time to print out a large table with numbers in it and scrawled the names for all the character codes of XML2 and MUA so as to save myself time on looking them up every single damn time in Window$ Explorer. Yeah.
That's it for today's model rippage -- I've got a heap of clothes that need ironing. Wish me luck!

Excelsior!

Gladiator Toad; AoA Forge, Sinister, and Abyss (No Arms)

http://www.momoshare.com/file.php?file=06caef452904fa615d4827e2b879e33b

Abyss' arms and chest swirls are separate models, so I still have them to do. Plus, I found one more skin which I forgot.

Apocalypse's Horsemen, end of act bosses versions

Noel, I got a gift for you:

A pic of all the MUA Sentinels, in order (01-04) from left to right.

Sadly, it seems they are all different from the XML2 versions :-X Then again, I don't remember what its' Sentinels looked like too well :P
Title: Re: Converted XML2 Skins Galore
Post by: Noelemahc on February 14, 2007, 09:31PM
Yeah, these ARE different from the XML2 ones. Very well then, I'll get them all :D And then start in-game comparison to the XML1 ones because some of the XML1 seem to be based on older, more classick designs.

QuoteAoA Forge
That's not really AoA Forge. In AoA half his face is metal, and one arm is a metal claw :D

EDIT: Had a crazy thought. The Zealot Minions are as close to a baseline male as can get. Is there really no physical way to get those models into 3ds Max? Wouldn't it be cool to have our resident modeling god model models based off official models and their equally official proportions? That would add a spark of genuinity to the customs, wouldn't it? :D
Title: Re: Converted XML2 Skins Galore

If it were possible to IMPORT alchemy files into Max, I would have done so from the very start, if only to see how they were structured (and to get the F&*^ing bumpmap/refl/glow working) .
What is needed is an import script/plugin to be written, which is waaaay beyond me.
So good idea, but I don't know how to implement it, and strongly suspect that as things stand its close to impossible.
Plus, you get into even more copyright quandraries if you use other peoples geometry without permission, if Acclaim/Raven/Beenox/Whomever wanted us playing with their models they would have released the Max files.

Forget XML2 Sentinels. They're mapped with greater care (i.e. per-finger anims, not "thumb and the rest" like MUA's) and are of a significantly larger scale with no auto-scaling. Dang.
New stuff:
Left to right: Hellfire Club Minion, Lab Tech Female, Lab Tech Male.
Secret Ninja Enemies!

Genoshan Prisoners, Female (!) and Male, AFAIK :D

Archive: http://h1.ripway.com/ivank/XML2/XML2Baddies4.rar
(includes all the above, plus all five Sentinels -- no preview due to the differentiated mapping. They CAN be used as reskins of, say, Ultimo, Arcade's Big Bot or Destroyer though :D)

Offsets: HellfireClub.igb,-DXT3,256,256,36339,128,128,101875,64,64,29427,32,32,28403,16,16,22635,8,8,22555.

The Sentinels and Ninjas are multiskinned, obviously :D

That takes care of character codes 93, 102, 111, 112, 118 and 119. Whee! Next stop: more soljers! :P

QuotePlus, you get into even more copyright quandraries if you use other peoples geometry without permission, if Acclaim/Raven/Beenox/Whomever wanted us playing with their models they would have released the Max files.
You mean Activision? Acclaim's long dead, AFAIK, and bears no relation to any MARVEL games :P

But on topic -- I will look into the geometry formatting of the various platform versions. They're all compatible with the PC, but have different sizes. Chances are, each has their own format. The differences might tell me new facts about the IGB principles.
Also, it would be prudent to compare the MAX files you convert into IGBs via the Alchemy Pluck-In to the resulting IGBs, maybe something can be gleaned from that. I am not familiar with the inner workings of MAX's format, so I can't really tell you anything further :(
Title: Re: Converted XML2 Skins Galore

My exported IGB's look different to MUA or XML2 ones.
Very different.
So much so that you would probably say, "nah, that wont work in game" were you to compare in a hex editor, were you a casual observer.
The question of an alchemy import plugin for max is one big can o' worms that I dont care to open just now.
We have access to XML meshes, XML2 meshes and some new ones that I (or anyone else) can make. Lets be happy with that for now.
When we have character selection etc sorted I'll think about it again, but for now it's just beyond me.

Notes: All the multiples, yet again, are based off the first model in the set. Somehow, the change in texture caused the devs' IGB builder to rearrange the contents of the file in a seemingly random way. Sheesh.

This covers character codes 56, 57/58, 59, 64, 85, 95, 96, 97 and 133. Note that code 64, Death's Hand, is lacking a bolton (which I will deal with later, sorry), the cape. Sorry about that.

P.S. Yes, another model died on my hands today. Can anyone donate 0403.igb from MUA? I accidentally overwrote my backup XD

AoA Madrox! Cleverly hidden in another character's section (as 2002.igb)! Don't worry, he's the only one, I checked. There was also 9999.igb which I mistook for Uncanny Cannonball, but it turned out to be just a low-poly version of 10901.igb, Wingless Angel. Which doesn't mean we can't use HIM for Cannonball when we'll need to :D
He's obviously based off XML1 Madrox. Yeah. Apparently, they DID want to do the "Kill Madrox to stop the Madri" plot, but then dropped it. Damn.

That takes care of character codes 77, 78, 79 and 99. Note that the Mercenary (code 77) has the gun as a separate model with separate textures (largest is 128x256, see offset section). I do not know how to remove the damn cel shading outline from his CAR-15 (and it's the only one in the game, too!), so don't ask. Which is a shame, since otherwise this is a gorgeous model, looking awesome in Advanced Lights (esp. with High Adv. Shadows -- I just cannot snap pics in it easily). The guns are identically skinned among the Mercs, too. Just so you know.

You can go ahead with all the Infinites :D ##s 68 to 73. 71 is empty, so that makes eggsactly five :D

I'll go mop up the Prelates and Guards (##s 86, 87, 88), the SWAT guy (#127). That will cover all the remaining humanoids. And then I'll snag the Broods (#55), the Terrors (#98) and the Marauders (#76).

I used 1's model for all 5 skins. Took me a LONG-ASS time, cause I'm still hexing them in. The amount of time this took encourages me to try out MUA skinner for the next number.

Cross out 68, Noel :P

Sorry this is late. Dad's leaving for a vacation, so, true to Jerome K. Jerome's eternal writings, the whole family had to partake in the fun.

Anyway...

Top to bottom: SWAT guy and POW Marshal 1; POW Marshals 2 to 5; Prelate Lords; basic Prelates.

The male Prelates have their swords as separate submodels with separate subtextures, but, again, with identical mappings. So there.
No previews for the beasties, for obvious reasons that they have way more bones than humans in their anims and cannot be previewed easily. When we start adapting their powerstyles to MUA, we'll put up some screens of THAT. They are IN the pack, however.

"PrelateStuff" is the offset for the Prelates' swords. Obviously, it is also shared by the Prelate models due to the same-model trickery. Note that POWMarshal1 is a different model from the others, as seen in the previews. Amazing.

That scratches out codes 55, 76, 86, 87, 88, 98 and 127. What's left:
53 - Assassin Droid
54 - Behemoth
60 - Critter
61 - Critter Large
62 - Culling Probe
65 - Energy Demon
66 - Hellhound
69-73 various Infinites, BliZZ's home assignment :D
89 - Psychic Demon
91 - Scarab
92 - Large Scarab
94 - Sentry Robot

I call dibs on the two Demons, the Behemoths and the Assassins for next time. Excelsior!

Top to bottom: Behemoths, Energy Demons, Psychic Demons.

Yes, the demons came from XML1, but the skins are new and the models are higher-poly. Psychic Demons 1-4 are 128x, so I upsampled them and pulled them over #5 who was a 256x-er. Yay me.
The Behemoths are obviously based on Core Guards, but have new body parts, and thusly are differently mapped. Yuck. There are only four of them, breaking XML2's tradition of having five types of most enemies. Yeah.
No preview for the Assassin Droids and Sentry Robots as these guys also use non-human skeletons. Dang.

My Ripway account is now filled to the brim, so I will have to clear some older files pertaining to the development of the Next-Gen mod, probably, in order to free up space for the final packs. And once the Unipak is up, I will be able to wipe out all XML1/2 models as well :D

This eliminates character codes 53, 54, 65, 89 and 94. We're almost there, actually.

Tried both, couldn't get either to work. I've kinda been scared off of finishing the last ones, based on how much time it took w/o the skinner. If I find the offsets for the 3 remaining Infinites, would you do the reskinning?

Just butting in to state that #62, "Culling Probe" is a clone of XML1's 'Bots (the Shocker, to be precise), therefore their skins I've already covered in the XML1 thread can be used with this skeleton without any ill effects. I will have the other remaining skins up in a few.

Little update:

The Lab Tech Male (#102 of XML2) is the same model as Dr Banner (#77 of MUA), they are even identically mapped. The only difference is the skin tone and the presence of glasses on Banner's nose :D

P.S. Visual guides to BliZZ's skin conversions of characters you probably hadn't seen up close (includes Grizzly just because he got obscured by Holocaust's immensity in BliZZ's snap):

Note how Dazzler, despite being an official model, is just a reskin of Shadowcat -- that's because she's just a wannabe addition to the PC version's exclusive multiplayer level. At least the Hellfire Thugs (which are an equally exclusive addition of the same level) got their own model :P

Pop open the skin in a hex editor, search for 1201, 1202, or 1203 (depending which sunfire skin you use) and overwrite that with whatever human torch skin number you overwrote/added.
