  --XML1 auotmaps do not work. Perhaps have a "Map Viewer" in the menus instead that points to a static screen (like a loadscreen).
  --Cyclops and Magma need dmg_weld
  --Switch out magnetic bridge for lava bridge so that Magma can build bridges - give her main power dmg_magnetic (a hack)
  --All weapon-based characters need updated powerstyles (weapon = is deprecated in XML2)
  --Create overarching 'Danger Room Menu'. As players unlock flashbacks they'll appear in this menu when accessing the Danger Room computer. Selecting "Training Missions" brings up the regular menu, but "Flashbacks" will allow you to select any unlocked flashback (and will also tell you which characters are required)
  --danger_m.zsm, grsoel_m.zsm, master_m.zsm, sentad_m.zsm, sentsp_m.zsm, shadow_m.zsm did not copy over properly
  --Some characters may have sounds that need looping

Sounds for HAARP and the X-Mansion are done, aside from music. Movies are also done.

***Note to self -- try running remove() on heroes prior to select screen. See if it will "kill them off" and force the player to re-select their team.

Fun fact: XML1 actually had only 3 acts. The game never tells you, but I just got the strategy guide in the mail. I updated the first post to reflect the acts. Progress is still chugging along nicely. The Nuke Plant is nearly complete.

I think I'm going to start releasing a new build every 2-4 weeks for testing. It's the only way I'll stay motivated with the project. We only have like 10 active members, so I'm going to have to find other ways of getting the word out. I'm not looking for popularity, but I don't want all this work to only be enjoyed by 10 people, either. I'd love to get this up at ModDB, and if anyone wants to record "Let's Play" footage of the beta builds to put on their YouTube channel I'll link to them from ModDB.

The playable characters all use XML2 versions (mods are used for Emma Frost, Beast, Jubilee and Spider-Man), but XML1-like mods (mods with the powers from the original X-Men Legends) are out there already for most characters. If you want the original style characters nodoubt_jr did some great conversions of them here (http://marvelmods.com/forum/index.php/topic,1091.0.html).

Also wanted to report back on how we're moving along. I have all but like two levels running in XML2, but most are very incomplete still. All FX have been converted, though any I ran through the automated converter I built don't have any color to them (to be added later). Right now you can "play through" the game up until you need to start the HAARP mission, but Mystique still doesn't have the right powerstyle (I have it somewhere). The HAARP tank battles will have to be replaced with a bunch of bad guys, because the code the tanks use doesn't exist in XML2.

The goal for the first build is to let you play through the whole first mission (rescuing Alison), then play through the whole first visit to the X-Mansion. I may include the HAARP facility (the next mission), but it will be incomplete. I will be fixing the tank fights as soon as my finals are over, but I haven't even touched the Toad boss fight, so I don't know how well that will go.

You can play through from the beginning of the game (first mission) until you have to start the HAARP mission at the X-Mansion. There are a number of bugs, all noted in the first post.



This might be the last build for a while depending on interest and feedback from others. As I mentioned before without any help with feedback (or even better, help modding) I just can't keep up with the amount of work. Everything that needs to be done can actually be done. But I need people to help. Specifically someone work on recoloring effects (there are tutorials here), and character powerstyles for boss fights as about half of those are broken.

As far as the rest of the game, all but two levels load, and objectives, zone animations, etc aren't tough to do. The real hard part for me is going through and fixing powerstyles of characters that need tweaks, which has never been my strong suit. With 1-2 other people jumping on board to fix broken characters we could easily get at least half of the game running 100% inside of just a few months. If someone was working on those it gives me time to fix objectives, create and/or fix existing scripts, and just in general make sure level progression works as it should. It's nice because we can work separately very easily and merge stuff together easily since what you see in the download is literally everything you need to help out (aside from a few modding programs).



NEEDED FOR BUILD 0102
Build 0102 would see players get through the entire HAARP mission, the next visit to the X-Mansion, the Sentinel Flashback, and the first Sewers mission. Here's what I need help with (I can help anyone with setting up things to mod):

I just played through the first build. Besides the obvious bugs you mentioned it plays really well. I don't know if you are expecting any more thorough feedback (if you do, I can give it). But I enjoyed it.

I'm not sure to be honest. I don't even have the mod installed right now. I have everything all zipped up but I haven't done anything with it since the last build. I guess I was hoping for modding help, but our community is so small. I should probably just face the fact that I'm on my own in that sense and forge ahead, but it's such a huge project.

Sorry to hear that. I saw you needed help with powerstyles of a few villains I will try to give it a look. Are there Ps file any different than anyone else's or do we just need to change what type of damage their putting out?

Yesterday I spent a few hours on it and finished getting the HAARP facility completely playable. I started on the second mansion visit. Putting sounds, powerstyles and effects aside for now will make the work go a lot faster I *think*. I'm hoping that if I can get Act 1 working completely that I can call on some of the old community members to come in and help out with any necessary fixes to the characters or effects.

One bug is when you go into the x-masion the fist time and so to the subbasement and go to the mission beefing computer it does not teleport you to the next level :) :xmen_logo:

You can play through from the beginning of the game (first mission) until you have to start the HAARP mission at the X-Mansion. There are a number of bugs, all noted in the first post.

You can't play the HAARP mission in build 0101.

I didn't run into this problem at all. I was able to have a smooth transition with the Pyro fight. I do have two quesitons though. Why is everyone on level 12 and Psylocke has no powers in the build.

Level 12 is for debugging (this way everyone can defeat every enemy). As far as Psylocke -- she, Beast and Professor X aren't done.

So I made a hard decision and decided to cut ALL of the Astral Plane levels. They have a ton of issues. I could spend 30 hours getting those to work, or 30 hours getting lots and lots of other levels done. As always I'm going to leave every file intact -- the whole game is in there. I'll just tell the game to skip those levels.

That's my favorite level of the entire game. That was one of the main reasons I was excited about this project.

May I propose something? Since this is like a growing tradition in online independent projects anyway, how about a donation to give a incentive for you to complete the astral levels? (Please note, I'm not Professor X rich or anything) From what I judge from this community it's mostly people downloading content compared to the actual people making it. Plus, considering you are doing it on your free time with raising a child it should be a fair exchange. Since this thing been a long time going, I would rather have a full experience than a partial one. I hope I didn't insult your character or your reasons for doing this. It was just a suggestion to throw out there.

I get what you were trying to do, but being someone with a career, family, etc I'm a realist. It's a bummer, but the reality that the vast majority of large scale mods never get finished. And in regards to donations, it's a nice thought, but what I was saying is that my free time is so precious to me that I'd probably not do it for any less than what I'd do a contract job in my career. It's not meant to be rude. I mean, let's say someone said "I'll give you 50 US dollars to get those levels working." I'll spend at least 50 hours working on it, meaning I made 1 dollar per hour on it, and that's time I could have spent working on other parts of the mod, or with my wife and kids.

I want to be totally clear that I'm not trying to offend anyone, but I don't want to bring false hope either.

I am also someone with a career and a marriage (not a family, as I'm sure that is very hard). So I understand you weren't going to complete everything. I knew you were giving us theframework in case someone wanted to improve. I just wanted to see the framework of the astral levels. Plus, if we are being realist, you were the one who restarted the project. Once you become a leader of any project, expect to here compliments, complaints, suggestions, etc. and take them in stride. Not all people on the internet have bad intentions or attitudes. Yes you have jurisdiction but that doesn't give you the right to use your view of "realism" to be passive aggressive in the forum.

Plus my other intention of the donation suggestion was maybe to push other people to either donate or at least say to themselves, "Let me help Teancum." This i the last I'll talk about it, and I'll probably just log off from here for awhile so no other drama will be caused. Good luck with this, and I hope other people do try to help you.

Hello Teancum. If you can finish all the project, do and finish it. Do not pay attention to people. Rather, neither will help you. This is time consuming, requires time and skill. I myself just do not understand absolutely nothing in it.
If not more difficult, write every six months to the news about what has been done for the period, not to faded interest in people. From myself I will say that waiting for your full release at 100%. And I have people that's just too fanateyut of XML. They are also looking forward to the game. Thanks for the work. Bravo Teancum, for all the hard work you've put into this project. And I definitely understand your inclination to not accept donations, especially if you consider that Marvel or Activision might have legal recourse since would be, in essence, taking money for their original content. The Astral Levels were definitely fun, but having a more complete game is definitely preferable then getting burnt out not being able to finish a single set of levels.

Also, BlueElf, you seem to be the passive-aggressor in this instance. You offered a suggestion that Teancum politely decline. Berating him, however politely, for not accepting your solution does this project and this community a disservice. Instead, why not offer your time on the project? If you can't offer your time, then you should also have a better understanding of why Teancum does not wish to accept donations: Personal reasons. :)

Just wanted to say thanks for the support I've been getting from everyone -- everyone. I've seen encouragement here in this topic as well as in PMs, and I'm looking forward to the next build. I don't have much to report on that front, though. I've been remodeling my kitchen, but I plan on working on it again soon. The goal will be to fix bugs that already exist and get the game playable through the end of the first sewers. That will be build 0103. Build 0104 will see the Arbiter, the final mission in the first act, totally playable.

To avoid confusion, here's how builds work. The first two numbers are the act, and the last two are the version. So for example let's say I have build 0203. That's a build that only focuses on the second act, and it's the third build I've released for that act.

But I'm getting ahead of myself. What I plan to do is get Act 1 working really well. That means objectives work, all the heroes work properly, no crashes, effects working, sound effects, music, etc. At that point then I think I'll put up a ModDB page, make a trailer and send it out to news sites. Hopefully even if I don't get folks jumping on board to help at least more people can help encourage me to keep moving. :D

Professor X, Psylocke and Beast playables have been fixed. Now I just need to fix Emma Frost. Sounds are also 99.99% done for everything up to the end of the HAARP mission. Next I'm going to focus on the second visit to the X-Mansion, which will allow you to complete the sewers mission (which is already done).

Also, please continue to spread the word about the Facebook page. It's really been keeping me motivated. I'm hoping for 100 likes! As of this message we only need 8 more people!

Yeah, I left most of them breakable. In fact I don't think I removed any. I know for sure any walls that you *have* to break can be destroyed, but I'm pretty sure tons of other walls can be destroyed too. Let me get back to you on that. The sewers all work great except the part where you're in the non-combat zone where Healer is. For some reason the door to exit never triggers, so I'll have to hack something around that. All the objectives and whatnot work though.

I wish I could help you.  I used to be a Computer Science major, but decided programming wasn't for me, so I ended up transferring and changing to another computer-related major.  Either way, the programming ability I do have is nowhere near what this requires.

So another update -- I played through what I had so far last night. It crashed just before starting the HAARP mission, once before finishing the HAARP mission, and once when transitioning from from the main floor of the mansion to the subbasement (I couldn't get to that save point). I stopped my playthrough at the 2nd mansion visit, so there's still a bit more I need to play through to find any other crashes. The sewer levels work, and you can get to the USS Arbiter levels (though they are unfinished).

My advice to everyone is two fold:

The next release is still two weeks away, so maybe I can fix it.

So while fixing an issue on an USS Arbiter level I figured out why the Astral creatures weren't appearing -- corrupt builds. Below is proof that the Astral levels now work, and no longer have to be cut! (red arrows added to the screenshot for clarity)

Yeah, me too. The Arbiter was such a cool mission, if not the toughest in the game. Man, saving all those sailors before time runs out! This next build has things working up until you get into the interior of the ship. For some reason the sentinel launchers inside aren't working still. But it's still lotsa fun!

What?

You can't finish the game in this build, you can't even finish 1/2 of the levels yet. All characters are unlocked in this build. And yes, any enemy you fight in the game is available in the Danger Room vs mode once you defeat them in the campaign.

I added Angel to the game to see if it would work. When i went to the character select menu it just shows him as a question mark. Is there a way to enable him? I tried the X-men Legends 2 All characters cheat and it didn't work.

Exactly, that's what I was going to say, I defeated all enemies on Magma's  "City Training map 1" or whatever it's called but it still the only mission where after I kill all the bad guys the timer continues ticking down to failure, it never tells me i've completed the map after i've done the objectives and killed all the required 14 or so enemies.  On the plus side MAGMA IS STILL PLAYABLE  ON NORMAL MISSIONS!!! :D You just have to get to a xtraction point and swap out one of your team members for her and it works, puts her in the x-men costume and everything.

YOu have to save BEFORE to face Toad, when your game crashes, close it, and open again , load, and then, make sure you have Magma on your equip, defeat Toad, and tah-dahh! your game doesn't crash, and you could acces to X Mansion, but I don't know how to pass the Danger Room, my game crash when I try to do her missions.
Remember, ALWAYS, load and save, save and load. For now, it's the only way to advance through the game. My english sucks but I hope you'll understand me.

You need to put Magma in the last save point before face Toad. When your game crash, close it, open it again and load and defeat Toad, this time should not crash when you defeat Toad.

I just mentioned a solution to this a page back, if you  want to her to join you on the first haarp mission, all you gotta do is talk to Xaiver to enter the subbasement level (AGAIN incase this has happened before)and select the keyboard with the green arrow over it to talk to "Forge" and after that select "talk to you later" then go down the hall, make sure to do all of Magma's Trainning missions including the Mystique and Blob fights, (it would seem the first city one is bugged and cannot be finished for now but completing the rest still unlocks the first  real mission of the game). After that go down the hallway to the x-tract point(the one in the subbasement level still) and swap her out for another character. Then go back into the room were you talked to "Forge" have a character press the button on that keyboard console with the green hologram of the earth on it. This should give you the option to "start the haarp faicility mission", and the next time you reach an x-tract point you can swap out any character you want for Magma in her X-men costume! Hope this helps. :D

I really hope you reconsider that. The project doesn't have to be perfect per se just playable at best. Maybe if it was broken up in multiple programs? Anyway, it's your project so do what you will.

Anyway does anyone know how to continue after speaking Nightcrawler. Everytime I go to the subbasement the game crashes. I thought the sewer was partially playable. If not, I can just wait for the next build (if it will come).

I've got emails out to some acquaintances who know a lot more about debugging stuff like this, so I have a bit of hope still, but if it just keeps crashing at some point I'll get too frustrated to continue. Right now I'm still on fire since so much can be done in spite of the crashing, so that's good news. I've got another theory on how to clear out the "cache" so the game doesn't crash. It basically involves loading a bunch of teeny tiny levels all in a row so it flushes out the normal levels. The game 'remembers' the last 5-8 levels, so if I do that eight times in a row then we might get lucky. If I have to do that, I will. I'll just make the loadscreens look like there's a meter filling up to 100% with the words "CLEARING CACHE" above it. Gonna try it out this week.

In regards to not being able to get to the sewers, I originally had it set up so you skip the second mansion visit (since it was crashing). Looks like I accidentally put it back the way I had it without setting up the sewer missions again, so that will have to be in the next build.

EDIT: Nope. didn't work. I loaded 8 'dummy' levels and it didn't change a thing. In fact, it crashed sooner.

Wow. That's a ton of info to sort through! I'll see what I can find with that. In the meantime I've found XML2 has a lot of precache instances in .ENGB files. Like a TON. I can only assume they had memory issues while working on the game and so forced as much to precache as possible. Might be useful. I'm not sure. I documented all the precache types I could find but am taking a break for a few weeks to work on a mod for a different game. I'm also hoping to hear back from some of the emails I sent out for help from ex-devs and game modders that are great at hacking/reverse engineering.

So I'm not saying I'm starting the mod back up, but I did have an idea for how to deal with the game-breaking bugs. I provided a mock image below. Basically when we get to a point just before the game will have problems a prompt will appear. It explains to the player they need to exit the game and start it up again, but they can save their progress at that time. (see the mockup image below).

Thoughts??

The prompt sounds fine I have no problem with it. Can't see the image though. Tried to see it on my PC and Apple products but I couldn't see it. How does it know its about to crash to send the prompt?

The game doesn't know, but I do. I know that after around 5 of levels of continuous play the game will start acting weird, so I will make the player exit the game and load it again just before that happens.

In your X-Men Legends PC folder delete the file d3d8.dll. That should fix it.

It is actually a work in progress. If I remember correctly you put in the Activision folder and run it by clicking the .exe in the X-Men Legends PC folder.

After the Toad fight I got to the mansion and I was finally able to get to to the subbasement. When i talk to night crawler it says the danger-room flash back is available and I do not see it. And it won't let me start the next mission in the war-room?

So I tried my idea for fixing the issue with the game crashes and animation issues. It didn't work. I'm out of ideas, so I'm declaring this project dead. I even emailed a developer at Vicarious Visions (they made the game engine) and they don't even have any code that old to help me fix it.

No. I wasn't going to update the pack with any new levels because I wanted to try the fix first.

I found that if someone restarts the game after exiting themselves or me forcing it to crash (so they're forced to quit the game) makes no difference. The problems stay the same. Only if someone does something else one their computer for a long time (30 minutes or more) before coming back does it start to get better. That's just not up to my standards.

So after all that I have given up. I've put over 100 hours in to the game, but I can't put just as much in again only to not get very far.

So I found a Windows command to clean up memory from recently used processes (programs). If it works for XMLPC, I can make a launcher that runs it, then starts XMLPC. And if it actually fixes the issue the project can continue (it's really the only thing holding it back). I'll just create a launcher that runs this Windows command, then starts up XMLPC. Cross your fingers!

I downloaded X-Men Legends PC but is buggy, I killed Toad, there after killing him go to the garden of the mansion X, I saw a video that after killing the Toad, go to the site of the X-Mansion, but only that boy was with Magma, I when I go to bed I go with my team, ai se eu enter the error basement and the game comes out.

All,

  Here is build 0104. It has a few menu fixes, and includes the code to clear the game from memory (which fixes many glitches). I don't have the in-game prompts running so please save at every checkpoint, and close the game after the following checkpoints:

1. Before BLOB fight


2. First X-Mansion subbasement visit


3. Before entering HAARP facility


4. Before entering Ice Caves

DO NOT use XMen.exe to restart. Use XMEN RUNME.bat to restart the game. This will clear the memory. Once I can confirm that this fix works for everyone then I can move on with making new parts of the game work and creating a much nicer way to do this memory clearing method I've been using.

I'm releasing this because I don't know the next time I'll be able to work on the mod. This way you all can play through the mod a few times and make sure this works, and when (if) I get back to it I'll know whether this works for everyone.

hello beforehand congratulations to the creators of this project and thanks for sharing it, install it and I began to play it but I have an error .. in the danger room misioes alison (magma :magma:) the killing 14 soldiers is not completed, I mean the objective of the 14 soldiers met but does not end the simulation in the danger room and still discounting seconds ...

and I tried to skip that but the computer requires alison pass these missions x_x

Right, I forgot about the tutorial:

1) Navigate to \X-Men Legends PC\Scripts\menus\ and open new_game.py in Notepad
2) Put a # sign in front of the line loadMapKeepTeam("nyc/alison/nyc1_1_1")
3) Remove the # sign in front of the line for the map you want to play, for example: #loadMapChooseTeam("weapon_x/wfb/wx1_1") becomes loadMapChooseTeam("weapon_x/wfb/wx1_1"), without the # sign.
4) Save the file. If you'd like you can uncomment the line (remove the beginning #sign ) #awardXPToPlayable(9000000) #100k XP up-front to get a bunch of XP up front
5) Start the game and select "New Game". Skip the cutscene

To go back to normal, just reverse what you did in the new_game.py file

I'd rather people not continue it to be honest. As I've told others before I hit a rock-solid brick wall that's directly tied to the game engine. There's no fixing that without someone who can make a trainer or reverse engineer the game engine.

In your X-Men Legends PC folder delete the file d3d8.dll. That should fix it.

Hey, Teancum i was wondering, i played it for so many times, what if you don't do it exactly like it was on PS2? i mean you always can change some things, it doesn't have to be 100% accurate. you could change some interactions and boss battles. etc, that what is giving you an error. could easily be replaced by something else.

It's not really about that, though. I can't progress because it just flat out runs out of memory to load what's needed.

well, what is exactly causing the problem? if it runs out fo memory you could always split the game in two parts? or 3 if needed.

Or... you could just simply try the MUA engine instead of XML2, since mua is bigger and has better graphics. now with all those meshmods. it would be better as well. i hope you don't mind. but i made a page. and i am trying to get as many supports as possible! to encourage and motviate you back to this project! i hope this will change things. if you can, and want. you always can start on MUA engine, it would be better anyways. if you're intrested, here's the link of the page.

My game keeps crashing once I try to go into the X-Mansion after the Toad battle. I know this is a common bug, because it's even in the "!quickfix notes" file. However, unlike the other crashes listed, which only happen once, this one occurs every time. Is there a way to bypass this and get into a more stable area?

Another question: how do I take out Spider-Man? I went through the files and deleted every file that had either his name or his number. However, when I go into the character menu in-game, his name is still there, but there's no icon for him. I tried selecting him once just to see what would happen, and the game crashed, so that leads me to believe that I've deleted all but a couple of things.

Try completing the Toad fight with Magma on your team. She's required for the X-Mansion areas.

I really hate to necropost, but I had this problem as well. So, I figured I'd post the solution in case anyone else runs into this problem.

I had to change my computer monitor's  resolution to 800x600 in order to get the exe to launch.

Then, once the game launched, I was able to change the display settings from within the game's options, then exit and set my screen resolution back to it's original display. You might have to play with the display settings to find which works best for you and your setup. Hope this helps.
