where can I get the latest patch for this game? or perhaps a mod that fixes at least some bugs? usually IGN had links to patches but not this time!
Have you downloaded the Official Characters Pack? If you've been finding bugs, this fixes a lot of them.

ah, right. No I did not, I re-installed the game and decided to complete it vanilla for once before using mods :D

I don't think that's absolutely necessary (I never downloaded it myself) but you can if you want to.
what does it do?
X-voice contains sounds from the game, like menu callouts for some characters, teams, menu breaks (what they say when you are ready to start a mission, etc)
The OC mod includes its own x-voice file that also add sounds for the new characters (Black Widow, Hawkeye, Hulk, etc.), so you don't have to download it.
