Title: Re: City of Heroes: Freedom
Post by: Polygone on September 27, 2011, 10:22AM
Mm though choice, somewhere along the lines of Poison Ivy? If not I would love somewhere near a Ms marvel character (yellow energy, super strenght)

If all else fails I shall have a Emma frost based character (just try to show as much skin as possible, oh and wear a cape xD)

Could you tell me if the Nature archetype is free? My game is updating (35%!)
Title: Re: City of Heroes: Freedom

Im in love with the game, the psychic / psionic powers have awesome effects. My character is called Emma Summers has mental powers and her secondary powers are psionic powers which means she can shoot psionic bolts and stuff. And small telekinetic blasts. I love it, i will try the other power sets sometime

City of Heroes is an amazing game, Ive been playing since it started :D although White Queen you character's name is way to close to Marvel If they dont notice it, someone will most likely report you. I had Ororo Windrider for my Storm character and I had to change her name, they change it for you, but then you get to change it to something you like and they delete your costumes. Just a fare warning.

Cool I'm gonna make a Jean related character with powerful psychic abilites. Maybe later a Storm character since nature seems great.

You'll probably want to make a Mind/Fire Dominator then. Psychic/Psychic Blasters kind of suck. Then probably go for a Storm/Electric Corruptor.

I might try to download this tomorrow. I seen the vids and pics on the main site, and it didn't look much better than Champions. But, cant judge a book by its cover... so I wont be too judgemental.

One question though? Do you get to choose everything for your character? (Look, colors, powers, power colors, etc.)
Title: Re: City of Heroes: Freedom
Post by: Dihan on September 27, 2011, 05:01PM
Appearance: Yes
Powers: Yes. There are Archetypes and powers for each Archetype. You choose a primary power and a secondary power.
Power colours: Yes.

You can also choose whether you want to be a hero, villain or something in between.

hmmm... Sounds nifty. I think the "In between hero/villain" thing got my attention. XD I'll be makin my Gredin character (if its possible... lol) I'll have it download tonite while I'm sleepin.

Emma Summers is no where near close as Marvel Emma Frost, Emma is a name very popular and used alot, Summers is just my surname i use, besides my outfit is magenta and my powers.

and i agree plant manipulation looks amazing, however most powers are traps and stunning powers not much offensive. However the spike/thorn powers look interesting. Mental powers are said to be the weakest and most powerful powers in the game at the same time which confuses me xD

this is what i kinda meant, most powers are kinda like traps etc. especially in the beginning you really rely on your second powerset, i might give plant another go, who knows? XD

The thing about Control powers is that they don't need to do damage. They're good because if something can't attack you then you're going to live. On Dominators you have a secondary which is all about damage (and Dominators do good damage), Controllers don't do good damage because they're more of a support archetype than offensive.

I only play Dominators and Controllers so excuse me whilst I go into the strengths of every Control set. :D

All Control sets - Single target hold (get this at level 1), single target immobilise (skip it - it's useless), AoE hold, AoE immobilise (leave until later because it will end up getting Dominators killed very quickly on teams)

Earth Control - Lots of Defence debuff (allows you to hit things easier), Stalagmites and Stone Cages can be used together to create a pseudo-AoE Hold, the AoE hold is a patch so it stays around for a long period of time, the Golem is pretty sturdy.

Electric Control - Lots of Endurance sapping (if the enemies don't have endurance then they can't attack you as much), utilises lots of soft control (knockdown, sleep) to simulate hard control, the chain confuse power doesn't aggro, Conductive Aura makes this set quite safe to use in melee, the Gremlins are a bit annoying but they can be useful.

Fire Control - Good damage for a Control set, can use Flashfire and Fire Cages together to create a pseudo-AoE Hold, Bonfire isn't that amazing but it's funny, Hot Feet gives you a reason to be in melee by doing damage to everything that is around you, the Imps are a good source of extra damage.

Gravity Control - Probably the least effective Control set. Most notable powers are Wormhole (a power that teleports the enemy and stuns them) which can be used with Crushing Field to create a pseudo-AoE Hold, and Singularity which is a very resilient summon that uses Control powers which kind of makes up for the lack of control in the set. Skip Dimension Shift at all costs.

Ice Control - Ice Slick is the best power available in this set because it makes everything that steps onto it fall over repeatedly, Arctic Air gives you a reason to be in melee and is actually a good power because it confuses anything that comes close, Jack Frost is a bit frail but can do some good damage.

Mind Control - Mesmerise is awesome because it's the most powerful Sleep power in the game, by level 4 you will have a full ranged attack chain if you take Mesmerise, Levitate, Dominate and your initial Assault power, Confuse powers are very good (they decrease experience a tiny bit if they attack and damage other enemies but the speed at which you defeat enemies makes up for this), Mass Hypnosis is a good opening power, Terrify is pretty good as an attack, Mass Confusion is awesome and really speeds up fights.

Plant Control - Roots does twice the amount of damage that a normal AoE immobilise power does, Seeds of Confusion recharges very quickly meaning every mob will end up being confused, Carrion Creepers is a very good extra source of damage, the Fly Trap is a bit useless.

And the one you probably won't get to play:

Illusion Control - High damage (off-set by it being partially healed back), a very good single target confuse power, the best Invisibility power in the game, three non-permanent summons that are indestructible and take all the aggro off you, a good Fear power and the Phantasm is pretty ok.

I shall repeat: If they can't do anything to you then you win. You Hold/Stun/Confuse/Sleep/Drain/Fear/etc something and they are defenceless, meaning you can just kill them at your own pleasure.

Just because it isnt Emma Frost or Scott Summers doesnt mean anything it is a big no no to have similar names and those are both Marvel names. You may not get in trouble tho you never know I like the name, hopefullly you get by. And Plant powers are so fun I have a lvl 50 planet person (Poison Ivy technically)

It wasn't just the graphics, it was the controls. I'm so used to using a controller for everything (except Guild Wars...). I just wasn't feelin' it. And to me, (it may just be because I'm on gold) but it felt like there was more costumizing with the character on Champions. But again, it's just my opinion :)

To tell you the truth, i thought that it would be better than champions, but Champions is better, there is more customizing in Champions, the powers in COH are awesome, but i like Champions More.
Title: Re: City of Heroes: Freedom
Post by: Polygone on September 29, 2011, 10:53AM
Yep, my feelings exactly

The power customisation is AWESOME, really gives something unique to your character, however, Champions know way more character customisation, besides, I think Champions looks kinda better :P

Not saying im stopping with playing though, I made a weather/lighting character and she's awesome to play as :D

Title: Re: City of Heroes: Freedom
Post by: Midnightphoenix on September 29, 2011, 02:45PM
Since it went free you get less stuff. To tell you the truth, I believe COH looks 1 millions times better then Champions, Champions looks to comic and childish to me. I dislike the powersin champions also and believe COH has better powers. I also think the costume pieces look better in COH Champions is a Coh spin off to me, with all the same costume pieces plus more, if Champions changes the way it plays, and looks like COH I would play it. I guess its just you all started on Champions and went to this so you like Champions better
Title: Re: City of Heroes: Freedom
Post by: White Queen on September 30, 2011, 04:40AM
Well this is my results of both games but thats only my opinion

Costumization ( Outfit ):

Champions - Awesome, alot of custome pieces and many things
.
City of Heroes - Awful not much costume pieces and those locked for paying members are also awful. Not much color costumization for the outfits. And most hair styles look like from the 90s

Costumization ( Powers )
Champions - Awful because feature locked for gold members but still i have tried it before it went free to play and the color costumization is good

City of Heroes - Awesome, alot of color options for the powers and different animations

Powers

Champions Online - Good powers, very well made. Alot of powersets and travel powers

City of Heroes - Awsome powers, however the effects are very ugly. Many powers however little travel powers

Graphics

Champions Online - Very beutiful, alot of settings. Even an option to have black lines around everything to look like a comic which i personally like alot

City of Heroes - Very poor graphics due to the game being old from an age where there werent much graphics ( the age of 2003 xD )

Gameplay:

Champions Online - Very fun alot of enemies

City of Heroes - Very fun alot of enemies however the zones can be bigger they are a little to tiny

Total Points

Champions Online 4/5

City of Heroes 3/5
Title: Champions Online
Post by: Scabbia on September 30, 2011, 02:05PM
The models on CoH can be used on The Sims 1, and when CoH was released, I do beleive, the same company that made it, made other games that were at least a little better on graphics. Guild Wars was released around the same time, and it looks and plays better. Which is really sad knowing these are all by the same devolopers lol. I personally like my games simple on the controls, I could have dealt with the simish style, but I just couldn't grasp it... And even though Champions is very toonish, it still has a whole lot more to work with on costumizing the look of your character. And I agree, the powers aren't all that fantastic like I seen of CoH, but the way you use them is better in my opinion.
Title: Re: City of Heroes: Freedom
Post by: Midnightphoenix on September 30, 2011, 02:44PM
I agree and disagree.

Custom content

COH: Amazing, could be more, but great non the less
Champions: Amazing aswell, no need for more there is enough

Powers:

Champions: Not so great
Coh: Amazing!

Graphics:

Champions: Awful, they look like a tacky comic book, I hate them
Coh: Amazing, I find them really great and 100 times better then Champions

Gameplay:

Coh: Amazing, worlds could be bigger, but do missions and you wish they werent
Champions: Alright, a little to scattered, and I dislike the worlds

OMG Scabbia i was thinking the same thing. The characters really look like Sims 1 xD

and lol midninghtphoenix you must be kidding. COH graphics are really bad. Champions has the best graphics. If you dont like the comic line mode just disable it. When its on it looks better more comic like which i personally love. DC Universe Online's graphics can beat both of those games xD

Lol no, I thought you were kidding. Im not trying to be rude but Champions looks horrible, it looks like someone threw up on my computer screen, it looks horrible. COH looks a million times better, plays better, almost everything is better about it. Ive been playing City of Heroes for as long as I can remember, and I bought Champions for 70 dollars when it first came out thinking it would be better, but I found out I was extremly wrong and it looked like crap.

Cel shading can look good but Champions Online's take on it looks awful. With City of Heroes there is some disparity between the content, but the game is 7 years old so that's to be expected. The most recent additions look tons better than what Champions Online (e.g. the revamped Atlas Park, the Steampunk, Barbarian, Circle of Thorns, IDF, Alpha costume sets, the Time Manipulation, Kinetic Melee, Demon Summoning powers).

Recently i found out that NCSoft has terminated Paragon Studios, and City of Heroes will be closing on November 30th. I updated/bumped this topic, so the City of Heroes fans/veterans/players on this forum could says their goodbyes to the game. I havent really played the game for that long just about like 5 months or so, but i liked it ( When it wasnt crashing xD ) The character creation process is neat ( just didnt liked that you had to buy the capes or be a member to have one xD ):P, gameplay is realistic, you can do all sorts of things. From melee to energy blasts, and so much more. I liked how you can pick the color of the powers, and the animation style. Thats one of the things i liked most. The graphics werent that great ( cus well you know the game is 8 years old so.. ) but they were nice :P
I will miss the game, and as the first superhero mmo it will be remembered. :)

I read about this a week or so ago, it is sad because I just dont want to lose all my characters lol. I really enjoy the game, but my favorite part was making costumes. My dad always got mad at me because that was all I did, I would level up just to unlock more slots, and then rush to the costume place and spend all my money changing my costumes over and over again.

I really really wish I could, but sadly I share an account with my Dad and he stopped paying the subscription so all our characters were locked, and he used all the slots we have to unlock every single one of his characters and all mine are locked, so I can't even play them one last time :(
