Title: For those of you that would like to know.....!
Post by: cable2099 on August 21, 2007, 07:53AM
I just wanted everyone to know that I have sent several emails to Activision about the DLC for the other platforms. I have been going rounds with them for about three days and it has made me a little tense so if I offended anyone than I apologize. I dont know what good I did but I hope that I did some good. They basically told me that my comments have been noted and will be given to the project head. If this will really happen is unknown. Of course, they did not give me specific answers.

since it may be doubtful that they will release the DLC for other platforms, you could always try to contribute (here or on your own) to make the game more enjoyable. if you arent satisfied with the characters released here you could always try to figure out what would make them better for you, etc.

Unfortunately emails never work.  I've been a PC gamer and modder for 10+ years and have never seen anything come of it.  The thought was good though.  Hopefully you can put that energy to use and pump out some cool mods or something too. :D

Well, one could only hope that the message gets to the devs. All you need is hope and faith. BTW I am not really an artist and my mods would consist of stick figures or just blob patches.:)

See that's the thing: Raven Software is actually really cool about releasing mod tools and assets and stuff.  It's Marvel and Activision that are holding us back.  Raven released tools for Jedi Outcast, Jedi Academy, the Hexen series, Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force and Quake IV.  If it was up to Raven we'd probably have lots of unused models, (like the New X-Men costumes that never got used), mod tools, etc.  Look at it like a NASCAR team.  You're the driver.  You get to have the fun.  Raven are the mechanics and fabricators.  They fix and create cars.  But Activision (and Marvel in this case) are the team owners.  Only they get to say what sort of features go into your car.  As much as the mechanics might say "doing this will make the car better" it's up to the owners.

Than maybe we should boycott Activision until they get their heads on straight. When they start losing alot money than they will listen to us. We, the consumer, control their fate. They do not control us. We spend our money on their products just to get screwed in the end. This is America for goodness sakes we need to stand up for what we believe in. We just need to ask people to stop buying their products and give them reasons. We have freedom of the press and power of the press also. But I think people are too afraid to want to try to make a difference so they sit down and be silent.

Ha. A boycott.

PS: How does freedom of the press correlate to this situation?

For that kind of boycott to work you'd need a 1/4 of a million people bare minimum, which will never happen.

Face it man, they are here to make games, but the can't put everything in that we want.  1) At some point you've spent to long developing and the project will go over-budget (developers get fined bigtime for this), 2) They leave characters out so that they've got some good main characters in other games, and 3) they only get paid so much money.  Doing stuff like what we want would mean putting in lots of extra hours -- and these guys don't get paid by the hour, they're salary.  So whether you work 40 hours or 70 you get paid the same.  They've got families and lives.  Heck, I feel for em'.

Frankly I'm supremely happy with what we were given.  It's bar none one of the best games of 2006, AND they left us a few 'extras' (models, scripts) as presents in both XML2PC and MUAPC.  They don't owe us a single thing.  Frankly, I think consumers (particularly gamers, as many of them are quite young) have this retarded sense of entitlement.  As if because we bought their game we should get extra stuff.  In reality, extra stuff should cost extra money.  The 'extra stuff' we do here is different, because we're making it.

On top of all of that, I'd never boycott a game.  Being a modder for 10+ years and being project lead in several projects has taught me that even as a hobbyist modder you can't give everyone what they want and still have a life.  You just have to do the best you can then move on to the next project.

These guys want to make the best game out there.  They do.  But there's way to many other influences that you don't understand.  You're painting Activision out to be evil.  They're not.  They've brought us hundreds of amazing games over the years -- Guitar Hero, XML/MUA.  The list goes on.

I never said that Activision is evil. Besides the ends dont justify the means. I am 32 years old and I also have a family to support. Do you think it is fair that if I want to have more characters that are over the limit of 27 for the actual game that I have to spend $400 on a X-Box ($50 for game, $350 for system) to play those extra characters? I understand you guys here do these mods here but are only limited to the 27 characters and I am sorry but I want to keep all of my characters because I like them. The PC was already screwed out of Colossus and Moon Knight and the bonus missions. If it was not for people understanding how to unlock them than I would never have gotten to play them. Those 2 characters plus the other 8 for the DLC that is 10 characters total that they did not put with the PC. All I am saying is that Activision only cares about the money and not about the love of the games. If we want to put the blame on the DLC lets do it on Microsoft because why was their system the only one for the DLC? Because the 360 is not selling as well as they wanted, so they make a deal with Activision to release 360 only DLC so that us consumers that want to play those extra characters that dont have a X-Box have to buy it to play it and get the extra characters. I could understand if they did for all other platforms and not for the PC but they only did for the 360. So tell me what exactly is fair in this situation? If MUA was only released for the 360 than fine they can release what thy want but they did this to all platforms. I love this game and want the extras, is that too much to ask for? I am not asking for every game just for this one. I can not afford to spend $400 on this game but I guess I will have to if I want to get the extras. If I am wrong than prove me wrong.

Yeah, I'm 28, supporting a family, going to school, and only make about 20 grand a year.  All I have is my PC and a modded Xbox, where I have my MUA mods.  Can I afford 400 bucks?  No.  But it's no crime that the 360 is the only one to get the DLC.  That's the way the cookie crumbles.  In fact, I 100%, positively, absolutely guarantee that you'll never see the DLC released on any other platforms besides the rare possibility of the Wii and PS3.  That's how business is.  They get paid more money to do exclusive content, all companies do.  I don't worry about it.  I just live without it.

So to be blunt, your $400 whine means nothing.  I don't have the money either.  I just enjoy what I have.

Oh, and (my opinion only), I seriously doubt you're 32.  Adults have much better grammar.

So basically what your saying is that this country is the way it is and your not going to worry about it and not do anything about it just let it be the way it is. So try telling those people out there trying to make a difference that it is the way the cookie crumbles. So we cant change this country or the fact that we cant change a company's mind? Just sit back and do nothing and that is why your making only 20,000 a year and only 28 years old.I am 32 and making 30,000 a year. Good example!

Please. Stop. The majority of devs do not release mod tools, they will literally laugh at you if you boycott.

And this would NOT be "making a difference".

They can laugh all they want. I dont care what they think. How many times have people been laughed at for trying to make a difference and then they did make a difference? Can I name examples or does everyone understand what I am saying?

This is not "making a difference".  Making a difference would be helping the homeless, volunteering in some sort of needed manner, etc.  What you're talking about is nothing more than whining about not getting everything you want.  On the 'big deal scale' getting the same content as the Xbox 360 is like number 1,000,000 of 1,000.  If you only make 30,000 you shouldn't be able to get a Xbox 360 and MUA Gold.  At that point you have a family to take care of, so you sacrifice for them.  I don't like being a jerk, but if you're 32 with a family then you need to get your priorities straight.  By your non-contributing, never-satisfied attitude I'd say you need to put your focus back where it should be and forget about petty things like this.

Yes, I said petty.  A man who puts his family first would realize that even though he loves video games stuff like this doesn't matter -->  Leading to the thought that there's no need to "make a difference" with boycotting and crap like that.  I know lots of young husbands and dads, and none of them, even the hardcore gamers, would ever do this.

Ok, I'm better now.  Tommy, you are my hero.  No, seriously.  I always appreciate sarcasm.

Cable, yeah, it sucks we can't all get what we want.  If we all got what we want, we'd all be rolling around with 22" dubs and platinum grills.  It just doesn't work that way.  I totally agree with Teancum.  Being a modder since I was a stain on my parents' sheets and going to college for game design, art, and programming to get in the industry, I know exactly how much work it takes to produce games like this.  Seriously, there are worse games out there with less content than MUA, and by far worse developers and worse publishers.  Look at all the heat Eidos is taking for the Tomb Raider series. Look at how they actually treated Core.  Yeah, their games started to blow, but that's because Eidos started rushing them to get things done.  Core was a company who wanted all the extras in the game that people would like to see.  They were a fan friendly developer.  However, sometimes business doesn't always allow that, and that's what it always comes down to.  You can spend all the time in the world adding extras to games and have about 10 years to make a game.  However, by the end of the day, if you didn't make money from the project, what have you really done?  You wasted 10 years, countless millions of dollars, and blew any chance of getting another investor interested in a project by you again.  This is why time is important.  This is why there are limitations to games. People have to make money at some point in time.  Yeah, it's easy to blame Activision, but put yourself in the CEO's shoes for once.  What would you do if you put your company's reputation and mainstay at stake every time you went out to get a big title done?  You're investing anywhere between $20 and $50 million every time you make a big title.  Sure, you want it to be awesome.  But you can't sit on that $20 million of debt forever.  At some point, you have to make money just to cover the cost to make the game, then you have to worry about profit.  At the end of the day, you have a family to take care of, and a business to run so you can keep making games.  You have to realize how much these guys have to put out on the line just to make a big game like this.  If it succeeds, then you're okay.  If it fails, you're screwed and you won't be in the industry for long, if at all afterwards.  While it sucks they may be uptight about public modding tools, it provides job security because then you have exlusive content for other games in the franchise.  If they did release mod tools for MUA, and the modding community does every character from Marvel, what is there left to offer for a sequal?  Would a $35 million investment to release a sequal containing the same crap you see in modding communities be efficient or worth it?  No.  They have to protect their business.  While it's fine to get upset about it, it's not okay to criticize people for protecting their investments and taking care of something they put a lot of work in.  Like one dev told me, when you buy a game, you are effectively just purchasing a license for it.  You do not own everything about that game.  You do not own the game engine.  You do not own the model exporters.  You do not own the level editors.  You don't own anything but a right to play the finished product.  It's no different than something like Microsoft's Windows.  Just because you have a license and use it, does not give you the rights to everything they used to make Windows.  You are not entitled to the source code just because you don't like a few features and want to change them.  So please, save it.  As much as it sucks, nobody cares.  It would be nice to have mod tools, and I'm sure Raven wouldn't mind releasing some.  But it is what it is.  I'm not trying to sound mean, but if you don't like it, you don't have to buy the game.  It's as simple as that.
Title: Re: For those of you that would like to know.....!
Post by: cable2099 on August 22, 2007, 10:18AM
I am sure that MUA sold really well and that Activision and Raven should have no problems releasing extras for that game. I understand what Burning Rage is saying and I understand that a company does not want to lose money on something they created but I am sure that if something sells well that they should consider releasing bonus stuff as a thank you for all the people that bought the product. It shows that the company cared about their business and wants to keep the customer. I am really curious though how many Gold Editions that they sold or even that the people paid to get the content downloaded? I would think that if they wanted more people to buy the Gold Edition that they would release it on other platforms. I am not saying that they need to release bonus content for all their games but I feel that they should for the games that sold really well. If they dont release any extra content for this game it loses its replay value. I know that the people here have made mods to the game with what tools they have and some of them look really good. I am looking forward to playing She-Hulk when she is released. I know that the people here make it possible for more replay value. Look at Freedom Force 1 and 2. That has much replay value. What I am trying to say is that we should not have to use our own tools to modify a game and that we should have access to the devs. tools that helped create such a wonderful game. I play this game with children and they enjoy using Spider-Man and Captain America. They wonder why the Hulk is not in the game and I explained it to them. When I heard they were going to release bonus content and the Hulk was one of them. I was happy but I also had to explain to my children that it was only going to be released for the X-Box 360, of course they were not happy with that. I have been waiting for when someone could decode the X-box 360 discs so that we can have it for the PC but that does not look like it will happen anytime soon. So I am forced to buy the X-Box 360 so as to have the bonus content. 'Nuff Said!

well you dont have to waste the money. you have already played the game so you know what the game is about. you should enjoy the extras through some other means, video, a friend, or even read about it. you of all people should know that games get boring after a while. if you did buy the system and the game, you would probably play it, see the extra features and say well that was cool but that's it! in the end you still have the same game that you've probably been playing for months! extras are cool but for the short time you enjoy them, is it worth it? just trying to help someone supporting a family =)

BTW I was visiting MUA.com and I came across this:
http://www.marvelultimatealliance.com/news.php?id=547&cat=all_news&page=1#headline

It has the date of 5-03-07 on it and says Console and PC screenshots and if I did not know better but that looks like the Hulk and Hawkeye in those screenshots. So if they are not going to release a Gold Edition of this game for the other consoles and PC why put screenshots up saying that?

But PC? If they were only going to release for 360 they need to be specific. It would tell anyone that the Gold Edition or DLC is going to be on PC and all consoles. So technically it is false advertising if they can not post that the screenshots are only for the X-box 360 but it says console and PC not X-Box 360 and PC. So when you read something that says Console and PC screenshots what does it tell you?

the bottom of the pics say "source: XBOX 360" and the last have "source: PS3", so i dont think it a case of false advertising, that is the name of the section, it doesnt guarantee that all the pics will be both pc and consule, just that is a collection of both.

Yeah, but Cable, face it; you have this conspiracy theory/whining thing going on.  Ask anyone here.  Why can't you just be satisfied with the fact that we can put any character we want on the PC by making them ourselves?  Besides, I thought you went out and bought the Gold Edition and are picking up your x360 soon, so you have nothing to complain about:

Quote from: cable2099 on August 19, 2007, 02:18PM
I picked up the Gold Edition of MUA today but had to put the X-Box 360 on layaway. So I will not be able to get it for some time.

however. . .

Oh, I thought others owned it also, besides if I had my X-box 360 system I would do it but since I will not have it until I get paid next Thursday. Buying it for my kid's birthday on Saturday.:)

So unless you're giving us the run around you of all people have nothing more to complain about since you actually own MUA Gold and are picking up your 360 very soon.  Personally If you own the PC version I have no idea why you're complaining, and if you don't then you'll have MUA Gold.

Thank god we have so many talanted modders in this community that are willing to give us their incredible work. Teancum,
All I am saying is that if it was or is being released on the PC than that means there was no sense in me buying the X-Box 360. If I have no choice than I have no choice. As I said before I prefer the PC. Yes, we can mod this game but we all did agree to the licensing agreement but we are resorted to moding our own game which we should not have to do but are forced to do it because of the devs. Other people's mods are good but I just dont feel right about installing them on my game except maybe She-Hulk. I installed the Next Gen Mod but that was because those characters were not unlocked for the PC and I felt that the PC should have gotten some exclusive content like it did for X-Men Legends 2. I felt robbed by that fact. Yes, I have the Gold Edition and look forward to playing it when I get my X-Box 360 but I like the controls of the PC keyboard better and the graphics.

If they didn't even do the DLC, you wouldn't have anything to complain about to begin with.  So don't say "ZOMG I need a 360 b3cuz t3h devs".  If they didn't do it, fine.  It sucks, but you know what, our soldiers are dying in Iraq trying to fight off terrorism, and here you are bitching because you don't have "official" DLC content.  I know it's hard to imagine, but there are bigger things in the world than 8 characters.  If you don't feel comfortable installing mods, then get the hell off the modding community, because that's what the purpose of being here is.  Now please, give it a rest already.

The PC exclusives (Pyro and Sabertooth) for XML2 were just re-skins of Sunfire and Wolverine.  I think Sabertooth had pretty much an identical powerset and Pyro had one new firebat power.  Any modder on this forum can do a simple re-skin, and many mods go much further than that.  So, even though Xbox360 got new exclusives, the PC version provides an unlimited amount of extra content and you can't beat that, especially since it's free.
