You feed it, it lives.
Give it water, it dies.
What is it?

It cannot be seen, cannot be felt,
Cannot be heard, cannot be smelt.
It lies behind stars and under hills,
And empty holes it fills.
It comes first and follows after,
Ends life, kills laughter.

This thing is greater than God,
eviler than the Devil,
every poor man has this,
and if you eat it you will die.
What is it?

Alive without breath,
As cold as death;
Never thirsty, ever drinking,
All in mail never clinking

"Nothing"

Can be expanded to the poor have it and the rich want it.

An old classic:

What goes on four legs in the morning, on two legs at noon, and on three legs in the evening?

Meh...it's the mouth. This can also go for the metaphorical riddle:

Thirty white horses on a red hill,
First they champ, then they stamp,
Then they stand still.

Spider. Don't you mean this:

QuoteFirst think of the person who lives in disguise,
who deals in secrets and tells naught but lies.
Next tell me what's always the last thing to mend,
the middle of the middle and end of the end?
Finally give me the sound often heard
during the search for a hard-to-find word.
Now string them together, and answer me this,
what creature would you be unwilling to kiss?

Quoteair, time -- could be lots of things

Yes, but I'm looking for one specific one. ;)

QuoteCan be expanded to the poor have it and the rich want it

Why would the rich want nothing? Wouldn't they be greedy and want more, as that is their stereotypical nature?

Dang, you people are good.

Here's the simplest:

Some months have 30 days, some have 31. Which ones have 28?

and a few more:

An eye in a blue face
Saw an eye in a green face.
"That eye is like to this eye"
Said the first eye,
"But in low place
Not in high place."

What can run but never walks,
has a mouth but never talks,
has a head but never weeps,
has a bed but never sleeps?

What object has keys that open no locks, space but no room, and you
can enter but not go in?

This thing all things devours:
Birds, beasts, trees, flowers;
Gnaws iron, bites steel;
Grinds hard stones to meal;
Slays king, ruins town
And beats high mountain down.

Oh, I thought it's a monster or something.

Giant? Tornado? Earthquake? Another monster?

QuoteHere's the simplest:

February of course.

ARIVER

and so my riddle....

a golden apple lies in a hall
white as milk
lined with sofest silk
has no holes or dooors
but a theif comes-
out the apple pours

muafan, do you use Google?

four prisoners are placed in a room. Each has a hat that is white or black. They are all free if only one of them can say exactly in one try what color is his hat. they are placed like this:

          |
_/B\_ |  _/W\_  _/B\_  _/W\_
(1)    |    (2)       (3)      (4)

no one can move
1 is facing right and 2,3 and 4 are facing left
they can all see the colors of the hats in front of them but not behind (ex: 4 can see 3 and 2, 3 can see 2 but not 4 etc)
between 1 and 2 is a wall. 1 cannont see trough it and 2 too
wich one will save them?
(and how, to see if it is not a lucky guess)

4
You haven't said that 4 can't see trough wall.
<

ok so if it's unclear:
they are not super human but they are intelligent so use logic

Maybe 4?
By seeing 2 & 3's hats, he realizes the pattern which is b w b w and therefore can say exactly which hat is in front of the other.
