Well, to keep it simple, unless you are an American Indian or in prison or an illegal immigrant, the new law requires that everyone else buy health insurance.  There will be a tax penalty ($695 to $2,085) if you do not comply.  Many say that the law is unconstitutional and some of the states are taking it to court.

that's strange. in most countries with "free" health care the money to fund the public hospitals comes straight from the taxes debited from your paycheck. you don't pay for it separately.

The money to pay for the health care will come from some workers' paychecks as you describe, but this is to pay for the other people who don't work or make less than $44,000 per year.  They will also have to have their own health insurance.

there's turkey, but only a small area (thrace) is in europe.
