Known History:

According to iammingy, MarvelMods originated in 2006 from a board over at GameFAQs. It all started in the board for X-Men Legends 2, then migrated to the Marvel: Ultimate Alliance board when MUA was released. A member named THX eventually announced that he would host a forum for the modders, and everyone migrated to this site and MarvelMods was born. iammingy himself, though a member, was not a modder until a bit later, when he began releasing skins.

According to B.L.A.W, one of our most prolific Admins, he didn't actually join until he wanted info on modding. He did, however, check the GameFAQs board often.

idrinkdrpepper, a well-known moderator, said this:

I was a member of a forum called "Haven of Apocalypse" (along with Tetragene) that was following the X-men Legends series, and I was told about someone on GameFAQ that had hex-edited the save file so that they could play as Archangel.  So, I went to the GameFAQ board to see how to do that (my GameFAQ screenname was nightcrawler329).  I think this was late October 2005.  Once I learned how to hex-edit the save file (very easy), I uploaded a video of it to youtube.  Actually, I created my youtube account specifically for that purpose.

The community of modders at GameFAQ was small at that point.  We were pretty much just poking around the various files using a hex editor and seeing which ones could be swapped and edited.  I remember Tetragene (who was also a member of the Haven of Apocalypse Forum) and I were editing the Effects files and trying to change the names of the characters.

I think a few months later, I had figured out how to edit the skin files using Texture Finder.  Since I am not a programmer, the process of editing a single skin file was a painstaking process.    I remember Tetragene, Kinstryfe, Youngblood0000, and Darkmythology had sent me some edited texture bitmaps that they wanted me to insert into the skin file for them.   I think I did a few of those, but then I wrote up detailed instructions on how to use Texture Finder + Hex Editor to make custom skins. I also compiled a short instructional document about how to hex edit your X-men Legends II game.  Youngblood000, helped with that.  He also created a download directory of all of the customized skins that people created.  As a matter of fact, Youndblood0000's web site is still up http://thegamersjournal.com/rpg/pc/xmenlegends2/

At this point, I think the modding community was still active in making more and more customized skins, but I took a break from it in anticipation of the upcoming Marvel Ultimate Alliance game.  When MUA came out, I went back to the GameFAQ boards to see if people were modding MUA.  I remember Noelemahc was kind of the person running things, along with thetommyboy2002, blizz, and darkmythology. I think they had identified that the herostat file as the one which governed the playable character roster.  They were also able to unlock Colossus and Moonknight by transferring some files from the console version (I believe?).

I started getting back into modding by trying to decode the herostat file.  The issue was that the only tool I had was the hex editor, and when you open a .engb file in hex editor,  you see a bunch of unintelligible hex strings along with some words and numbers.  Eventually, I figured out how to parse these files.  But, since I am not a programmer, I did it all by hand (translating one hex string at a time).  Thankfully, a user named nba2kstuff came along.  I described to him the method of how to parse .engb files and he created an awesome program that could edit them.  I think it was around this time that THX started marvelmods.com.

nba2kstuff also created a program that automated the skin-editing method, so that it no longer had to be done via hex editor.  So, I do think nba2kstuff deserves credit for getting the ball rolling, because his editing software really opened up a world of modding possibilities.

Original Post:

You know, I've been wondering... how exactly did MarvelMods come to be? Like who was the original first member/admin, and stuff like that.

I pretty much told you guys about it here:

Quote from: iammingy on May 24, 2012, 07:03PM
Did you guys know that our mod group originated from the GameFAQs board? It all started in the board for XML2, then we migrated to the MUA board when MUA was released. When THX announced that he would host a forum for the modders, we all migrated to here, MarvelMods.com.

I was around since the beginning (look at my register date). I wasn't a modder until I started my own skin thread.

I was looking at the GameFaqs board on a daily basis. I only registered here when I wanted to ask for info on how to mod :P

I bought MUA on it's release date here in Brazil and had installed mods as far back as early 2007, starting with that Colossus/Moon Knight unlock from before there was even an OC Pack. Much later when I first downloaded a previous version of the OC Pack with a dialog bug in murderworld I started posting to try and fix that. What first made me start modding was the fact that Elektra had terrible gameplay and is one of my favourite characters, so I had to make her better no matter what.

Still the only game I can mod for real. I'm not a modder cause I'm a video-game addict or programmer, I'm a modder because I'm a comic book geek, especially Marvel. So I mod cause I love the characters and want to do them justice.

I was aware of MarvelMods from when it started in 2006, but I forgot about it until 2008. So I joined, a few months later I starting converting Shafcrawler's Northstar from XML2.
Please do not contact me for any help in modding-related matters.
It is likely that you'll find what you need by searching the forum.

Anyone know the names of any of the admins, moderators, or Marvel Modders I'm missing? Please let me know so I can add you/them to the list.

I know Teancum started the rules list and was pretty influential, but how was he only a guest?

Can anyone tell me if I'm right about who gets the official title of Marvel Modder?

Also, any other info would be welcome. I feel like this thread should become something that every member should read at least once.

Blizz and Teancum were Admins prior to nodoubt and BLaw. Blizz is now a moderator (though away) and Teancum a Marvel Modder.

other moderators away: thetommyboy2002 (away but always checking around), Cates, idrinkdrpepper, darkmythology.

other Marvel Modders: MarvelFan12345, edward, Deedooo, shafcrawler, Marvel Watcher, Volsung, fluid_static, cvc, matt710, Burning Rage, Gevth, krum4o, midnightpheonix123 and, of course, Dark_Mark.

You forgot Noelemahc. He's one of the original modders.

Teancum deleted his original account (as explained here) which causes all your stats to be deleted as well.  That's why it looks like he was a Guest back then.
Use this poll to tell everyone where you are from:

Modding XML2 actually began sometime in late 2005 (well before Activision announced Marvel Ultimate Alliance).
The first marvel mods were new skins and modifying game-save files to play as NPCs (ie. Archangel).

If I remember correctly, idrinkdrpepper, darkmythology, Tetragene (the Dazzler fanatic) were some of the earliest modders on GameFAQs. There were no XMLBCUI or SKINNERUI to (de)compile your stuff. The only mod tools were TextureFinder and your favorite hex-editor. That's why I call those modders "stone-age" modders. :D

I really hated the GameFAQs boards. I am not sure what other people think about it... I hated it so much.
The moderators were freaking annoying. Oh, just saying "freaking" on their boards would get you a warning and have your "karma" decreased. In their minds, saying "freaking" =  saying "fucking". Modders could hardly distribute any of their work there. If you post a link to your skins, the moderators would delete it. We had to post our own email in the mod topics, so that someone would be nice enough to read the topic and email the skin to us. darkmythology was nice enough to made a website to host alot of the skins made by himself and a number of other people. These were probably some of the reasons why THX started MarvelMods.

It always amaze me how some people can get so drunk on so little power.

Have you ever read the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy? One of my favorite quotes was "... A programming technique that had been reverse-engineered from the sort of psychotic mental blocks that otherwise perfectly normal people had been observed invariably to develop when elected to high political office."

..... In other news :P

@ Iammingy: yeah I saw that. Tbh I used to leech files more. What? The work was amazing xD

When NBA2Kstuff made all his programs I actually felt like trying to mod. Skins first of course. Idk I felt kinda bad leeching all the good stuff and not making crap in return D:
