What are your dream rosters?
« on: December 13, 2013, 09:18pm »
So many mods to choose from, and yet you can only have 27 per game. So I'm curious to know what your dream rosters are. Do they have a theme like how I do it? Or do you just pick your favorites?

Below is a list of themed rosters I have that you may want to use as well. Obviously, as new mods come in, you'll want to update/sub-out characters. Characters written in RED are mods that are planned by myself or others, but aren't finished yet:

:captainamerica2: AVENGERS & ASGARDIANS (27)
Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, Hulk, War Machine, Hawkeye, Vision, Scarlet Witch, Black Widow, Ms. Marvel, Spider-Woman, Luke Cage, Firestar, Black Knight, Black Panther, Wonder Man, Crystal, Quicksilver, She-Hulk, Wasp, Moon Knight, Sif, Valkyrie, Hank Pym, Namor, Hercules, Nick Fury
(NOTE: Black Knight will be done in due time. Nick Fury wasn't an Avenger technically, I know. Have to find a spot for Odin when he is created. There's just not that many Asgardians for them to get their own roster.)

:silvers: FANTASTIC FOUR & SPACE HEROES (26)
Mr. Fantastic, Invisible Woman, Human Torch, The Thing, Silver Surfer, Hank Pym, She-Hulk, Namor, Crystal, Dr. Doom, Super Skrull, Thanos, Drax the Destroyer, Gorgon, Black Bolt, Captain Marvel, Nova, Adam Warlock, Malice, Rocket Raccoon, Star-Lord, Vance Astro, Gladiator, Beta Ray Bill, Sentry, Medusa, Moondragon
(NOTE: One spot remains. I think Gamora should get it, if anyone's interested in creating her. Or maybe Phyla Vell, or Mistress Death... Deadpool would like that.)

:cyclops: X-MEN (27)
Cyclops, Storm, Wolverine, Iceman, Colossus, Psylocke, Nightcrawler, Beast, Archangel, Jean Grey, Rogue, Gambit, Bishop, Jubilee, Dazzler, Cable, Professor X, Magneto, Emma Frost, Havok, Revanche, Polaris, Banshee, X-23, Sage, Shadowcat, Forge
(NOTE: Now THAT'S an X-Men Legends roster! Combining X-Men's Blue & Gold teams of the 90's, the original five, Xtreme X-Men, and other team members from the past, including Magneto. I was definitely a fan of Jim Lee's artwork.)

:spiderman: SPIDER-MAN & CITY HEROES (27)
Spider-Man, Firestar, Iceman, Black Cat, Luke Cage, White Tiger, Daredevil, Iron Fist, Cloak, Dagger, Scarlet Spider, Venom II (Flash Thompson), Silver Sable, Nick Fury, Dr. Octopus, Venom, Scorpion, Mysterio, Shocker, Rhino, Electro, Sandman, Green Goblin, Morbius, Carnage, Hydro-Man, Lizard
[NOTE: Spider-Man has far more villains than allies. What did you expect? However, all of the heroes mentioned have teamed with Spidey on a couple of occasions. Toxin can be used as an alternate until Carnage is created. Notice the first three mentioned? Spider-Friends!)

:wolverine: WOLVERINE (22)
Wolverine, Sabretooth, Deadpool, Maverick, Omega Red, Psylocke, Jubilee, Lady Deathstrike, X-23, Daken, Selene, Jean Grey, Shadowcat, Domino, Elektra, Black Widow, Viper, Guardian, Sasquatch, Northstar, Aurora, Shaman, Vindicator
(NOTE: Logan is my favorite character, so I've combined the ladies he's teamed with in Japan, Madripoor, etc, with many of his most lethal villains, as well as Alpha Flight to cover his time at Department H of Canada. Characters that would complete this are Cyber, John Wraith, Silver Samurai, Silver Fox, Bloodscream, and/or Puck. One of those characters is a secret mod of mine...)

:capbrit: EXCALIBUR & MI:13 (14)
Captain Britain, Pete Wisdom, Nightcrawler, Dazzler, Shadowcat, Marvel Girl, Blade, Psylocke, Black Knight, Sage, Colossus, Juggernaut, Longshot, Wolfsbane
(NOTE: Not a lot of heroes who battled in the UK here. Perhaps Meggan should be made - I'll think about that one. Lara Croft can be a guest character in this roster, as she'd fit right in. How about Spitfire? And does anyone remember Wild Thing - Nikki Doyle?)

:pman: THUNDERBOLTS (18)
Luke Cage, Songbird, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Venom, Punisher, Elektra, Moonstone, Venom II (Flash Thompson), Red Hulk, Captain Marvel, Shocker, Deadpool, Satana, Red Hulk, Green Goblin, Bullseye, Juggernaut, Penance
(NOTE: Obviously this includes past and current Thunderbolts. Needs a bigger roster though.)

:ghostr: BAD ASS ANTI-HEROES (27)
Ghost Rider, Blade, Wolverine, Punisher, Luke Cage, Deadpool, Cable, Psylocke, Archangel, X-23, Fantomex, Venom, Venom II (Flash Thompson), Black Cat, Domino, Bishop, Hellstrom, Satana, War Machine, Gambit, Black Widow, Elektra, Deathlok, Morbius, Pete Wisdom, Songbird, Red Hulk
(NOTE: I didn't include non-Marvel anti-heroes like Spawn, but I did include former villains, Uncanny X-Force and Thunderbolts. The first four mentioned are my favorite Marvel heroes ever. I'd like to see the sorceress Jennifer Kale created...)

:bheart: VILLAINS (27)
Blackheart, Dr. Doom, Magneto, Thanos, Dark Phoenix, Apocalypse, Omega Red, Mr. Sinister, Selene, Juggernaut, Sabretooth, Venom, Carnage, Dr. Octopus, Sandman, Hydro-Man, Rhino, Shocker, Electro, Goblin Queen, Enchantress, Green Goblin, Shadow King, Mysterio, Scorpion, Super Skrull, The Mandarin
(NOTE: I will create The Mandarin in due time. Bullseye was very close to making this roster - I may still put him in and bump someone off. Is someone interested in making Kingpin?)

 :warbird: LADIES' NIGHT (27)
Ms. Marvel, Scarlet Witch, Black Widow, Psylocke, Invisible Woman, Storm, Elektra, Rogue, X-23, Valkyrie, Spider-Woman, Firestar, Domino, White Tiger, Ronin, Songbird, Emma Frost, She-Hulk, Black Cat, Dazzler, Shadowcat, Jubilee, Magik, Crystal, Jean Grey, Wasp, Polaris
(NOTE: This was hard to pick. Wolfsbane and Revanche just missed the mark. And when I make Omega Sentinel, she will most likely bump another chick off. And when is Angel Salvadore being created? Hopefully, she'll look just like Zoe Kravitz...)

:cable: X-MEN EXTENDED (27)
Cable, Havok, Warpath, Karma, Omega Sentinel, Multiple Man, X-23, Fantomex, Domino, Polaris, Quicksilver, Deadpool, Sunfire, Angel Salvadore, Magik, Hope Summers, Blink, Sunspot, Elixir, Wolfsbane, Longshot, Magma, Sage, Lady Mastermind, Jubilee, Shadowcat, Mystique
(NOTE: This includes classic X-Force and X-Factor teams. I'm not sure when due to my many projects, but Mystique will be remixed. If Boom-Boom is ever created, I may bump someone off for her.)

I'd also like to one day create a roster of only youthful heroes, like Young Avengers, New Warriors, Generation Hope, etc. I'll probably call it "Young Marvel." I'll enter more themed rosters here, but that's all of them for now. How 'bout you?

Hmm, ideal roster? Well, if it's strictly 27:

-Take the original 23 (excluding Defaultman)
-Lose Blade, Elektra, Nick Fury, Spider-Woman
-Add Hulk, Cyclops, Hawkeye, Moon Knight, Black Widow
-Then add mods for Iron Fist, Black Knight and Nova

And if and when his mod is done, I'd switch out Silver Surfer or Dr. Strange for Blacklight (vice-versa if I want it strictly Marvel)

I think the roster I've more or less settled on is:

1. Captain America
2. Iron Man
3. Hulk
4. Thor
5. Black Widow
6. Hawkeye
7. Black Panther
8. War Machine
9. Wasp
10. Namor
11. Quicksilver
12. Cyclops
13. Gambit
14. Storm
15. Wolverine
16. Iceman
17. Colossus
18. Juggernaut
19. Magneto
20. Firestar
21. Spider-Man
22. Deadpool
23. Mr. Fantastic
24. Invisible Woman
25. Human Torch
26. Thing
27. Silver Surfer

I like having reps from the three main teams (Avengers, X-Men, all the Fantastic 4), along with Spider-Man (scared of encountering errors at the beginning if I don't have him in), and the others.  Admittedly, the only reason Hawkeye is in is because I wanted the Avengers team from the movie as part of my roster, even though I rarely use him.

I've been working on getting my 'perfect roster' together for about a year now, not really being able to actually play the game while I'm at it...

You can say that I have a theme, and you might call it after the classic statement: Make Mine Marvel. I want to immerse myself in the Marvel universe, having 'everybody' there who should be there - all the important members who would logically work together during a massive crisis: Avengers, Fantastic Four, Spider-Man and similar major 'street heroes'. I don't want to feel like I'm missing out on a prominent character.

No villains, no non-Marvel characters, no characters whom I don't expect in this large group scenario (like Elektra and Blade, but also Deadpool (even though I generally like the character and I do like him in the game)).

Additionally, I like the game to make sense. This means: no clashes of characters with NPCs. In other words, no Vision, no Nick Fury or Black Widow, no Inhumans, no Namor, not even Hulk.

I also opted to not have any X-Men on my roster. I like the X-Men to be a separate group within the Marvel universe, besides, Xavier's NPC and the movie preceding Act 5 places them back on Earth fighting Doom by themselves - and getting turned into Dark Cyclops and Dark Colossus while they're at it. Also, the X-Men have their own great game with XMLII.
Exceptions are Beast (who's as much of an Avenger as an X-Men) and probably Wolverine (since he's an Avenger as well and really does seem to be missing when he's not there).

22 members of my roster are fixed, I'm still deciding on the remaining 5. Fixed are:
-Classic Avengers-
1. Captain America
2. Iron Man
3. Thor
4. Hawkeye
5. Ms. Marvel
6. Black Panther
7. Wasp
8. Wonder Man
9. Scarlet Witch
10. Quicksilver
11. Hercules
12. Beast
13. She-Hulk
-Fantastic Four-
14. Mr. Fantastic
15. Invisible Woman
16. Human Torch
17. Thing
-Street Heroes/New Avengers-
18. Spider-Man
19. Daredevil
20. Doctor Strange
21. Luke Cage
22. Iron Fist

At the moment, my extra 5 are:
23. Tigra
24. Moon Knight
25. Nova
26. Wolverine
27. War Machine

I'm VERY much looking forward to your (Outsider) release of Black Knight, who would be likely to replace War Machine.
There are a couple of other characters who might take a fixed position in my roster should they still be released and should I like their mods: Monica 'Captain Marvel/Photon/Pulsar/Spectrum' Rambeau and Mockingbird.
Also, a Speedball (non-Penance) mod may make me reconsider part of the roster and get Justice and Firestar back in to make a New Warriors group with Nova.

Should it be possible to change conflicts between PCs and NPCs, the first character which I would return to my fantasy roster would be Hank Pym.
Vision is a prominent Avenger, but I can understand him working full-time on technical stuff and communications in the background. As a prominent NPC, he doesn't feel like he's 'missing'. (Besides, I have some issues with his mod, which I elaborated on in other threads.)
As a Defenders fan, I could be tempted to get Hulk back if a cool Valkyrie mod would be released and I could edit things so Valkyrie won't be selectable in Asgard until her sword is retrieved, while Hulk would be unavailable until after the mission in which you meet Bruce Banner.

Iron Fist
Mantis
Medusa
Moon Knight
Moondragon

I wrote about it four years ago, I then mentioned that I had been working on it for a year, but in the meantime I settled on my 'perfect roster'. I'm still occassionally tinkering on details and trying out new skins, but now (thanks to AdrianoAP making the classic Mr Fantastic mannequin) at least I have the selection screen perfected, see the screenshot over at http://marvelmods.com/forum/index.php/topic,58.1080.html.

So, my roster features who I think are the classic Marvel heroes who'd unite against the threats of Doom and company: these are the main Avengers, the main Street Heroes and the Fantastic Four; not the X-Men (save for some Avengers) and not the characters who are important NPC's of which it would make no sense within the game's storyline to have them playable. This makes for:

-Classic Avengers-
1. Captain America / U.S. Agent (U.S. Agent's skin has different boost powers)
2. Iron Man / War Machine (War Machine's skin has several different powers)
3. Thor
4. Hawkeye
5. Ms. Marvel
6. Black Panther
7. Wasp
8. Wonder Man
9. Scarlet Witch
10. Quicksilver
11. Hercules
12. Beast
13. She-Hulk
14. Black Knight
15. Spectrum (Monica Rambeau)
16. Tigra / Hellcat (Hellcat's skin has different boost powers)
17. Mockingbird
-Fantastic Four-
18. Mr. Fantastic
19. Invisible Woman
20. Human Torch
21. Thing
-Street Heroes/New Avengers-
22. Spider-Man
23. Daredevil
24. Doctor Strange
25. Luke Cage
26. Iron Fist
27. Wolverine

My focus is on representative classic Marvel from the beginning to, say, the Marvel print called the 'Heroic Age' (while I am a very big fan of the Jonathan Hickman Avengers comics that followed). So, a recent cool character like Squirrel Girl isn't in, nor would I add Kamala Khan Ms. Marvel if she would get a mod (even though I love their comics!).

Characters who just didn't make the cut are Spider-Woman, Mantis, Sersi and Deadpool.
Spider-Woman's been more and more in the spotlight over the last 10 years or so, but compared to the characters from my roster I thought she was just a little less prominent.
Mantis is cool and Outsider's mod is awesome but, like Nova, she'd be more suited to a more cosmic themed line-up, along with the Guardians of the Galaxy.
Sersi had a stint as a member of the Avengers but compared to others it was a relatively short time, she also hasn't been featured much since then.
I often like Deadpool a lot and some writers (like Rick Remender) even do a great job of writing him in team stories, but I still didn't think he'd be the most likely candidate to join the rest of the cast on this heroic adventure. Same goes for Moon Knight and Punisher.

BUT - there's one character where I have no good excuse for, except for the fact that I am limited by 27 characters. That character is Sam Wilson, (of recent times Captain America but classically speaking) the Falcon. I like the character a lot, I like his mod, but I have no idea who I should take out to make space for him. I don't think he has more reason to be present than the heroes I have on my roster now.
I'd be happy to have some geeky discussion about this though. Does anyone think Falcon should be included and someone else should go?

I'd say pull out beast and put in Sam. Beast, while a known member of the Avangers, is FAR more prevalent in the X-Men comics (the same argument could be made for Wolverine, but you only need one character out). Since you seem to be sticking with a mostly true Avengers squad, I'd make that switch.

Thanks for pitching in. I've had similar doubts, but Beast has often been a favourite of mine in the comics so I always gave him the benifit of that doubt.
As for 'true Avengers': Beast was an Avenger for about 70 issues in the first volume (of 400 issues, from the 60's to 'Onslaught' in the 90's); he starred in Secret Avengers and actually sided with the Avengers for most of the 'Avengers vs X-Men' crossover. It is true that in total he has been longer with the X-Men (or the original X-Factor) than with the Avengers.
Falcon was only an Avenger for 12 issues in the first volume; he hasn't been a prominent Avenger until more recent times and I would still mainly regard him as a Street Hero - but a very important one. And my roster isn't all about Avengers. So I am indeed now thinking about replacing Beast for Falcon.

I also often wondered about Wolverine, since I've never been the biggest Wolverine fan anyway, but I think that his absence would be more noticable as he's always been everywhere, and his presence in the game was already pretty strong to begin with, with him being featured in the intro, ending and several cutscenes. I also like maintaining the connection with the mutant side of the Marvel Universe even though I opted against having more X-Men in my roster.

Man, a lot has changed since I started this thread. A lot of the teams I have in the first post have changed. I'll have to edit it.

Hobgoblin: At first, I was surprised Black Widow was not in your roster, but then I remembered that you didn't want characters who are NPCs to be playable, keeping with the story line. That said, Wolverine is a must. He's featured in the intro and hi-res videos. Plus, he's no doubt the one X-Man that Fury would want defending the planet (besides Storm). I have to agree with BW17 -- Beast should go in favor of Falcon.

I'll share with you all the roster for my MARVEL & DC UNITED game, with the story line being that Dr. Doom (now being called "Dr. Doomsday" in reference to a DC villain) and his plan to steal Odin's power will threaten the DC Universe as well, prompting Fury to call for some DC heroes to assist Marvel's heroes in one epic crossover team-up.
MARVEL
Captain America, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Thor, Wolverine, Hulk, Silver Surfer, Ms. Marvel, Ghost Rider, Luke Cage, Invisible Woman, Psylocke, Scarlet Witch, Deadpool (14)
DC
Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman (w/ Star Sapphire), Flash, Green Lantern, Supergirl, Shazam, Zatanna, Martian Manhunter, Catwoman (w/ Huntress), Black Canary (w/ Batgirl), Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn (13)

Here is the problem I have with this roster: I really want Aquaman placed on the DC side, but I can't decide who to take out for him, if anyone. I was thinking maybe Poison Ivy, but I also want to keep the "Gotham Sirens" together. And you gotta have Deadpool and Harley Quinn together!!! If only the game's roster can extend to 28, this wouldn't be a problem. (I thought about picking Storm for the Marvel side, but they already have Thor, and meanwhile no telepath, so Psylocke took her place.) What do you think?

Damn... if only this game's roster could feature 28 characters without crashing... In my opinion, that's the perfect number as it's divisible by the number of heroes you can play as at one time. You can have 7 teams of 4 completely different characters. Sadly, all previous efforts to attempt that proved useless. It appears to be hard-coded, and adding more than 27 entries + Defaultman causes a crash. I keep hoping someone finds a way to have 28, but I'm not holding my breath.

If I'd have to pick one character to pull, it would be Silver Surfer. Though he's powerful and super fun to play as, he appears in the story as an npc. Alternatively, you could remove Shazam since he's fairly similar to Superman.

I choose Falcon over Beast only b/c he's in my X-Men herostat. I tend to also model my "Avengers Ultimate Alliance" herostat based on the MCU, so Dr. Strange is in there and so is Pietro and Wanda (which I omitted from my X-Men Alliance).

I try to keep characters to 1 herostat only so I can maximize the amount of available characters if a mod is updated or something. I have many custom herostats including:
Avengers Alliance - consisting of Avengers characters based on the MCU
X-Men Alliance - based on mostly the X-Men Legends characters, tho w/ no bad guys
Brotherhood Alliance - X-Men Villains
Cosmic Alliance - Mostly influenced by FF and Guardians, but some other space entities in there as well
Villain Alliance - mostly non-x-men villains, tho there is enough to form the brotherhood
Street Level - Spidey, Daredevil, Punisher, Defenders. Would like to theme this more to focus on the Missions part of the game b/c Cabral has made so many
Vanilla - for obvious reasons

That's three votes against Beast, it's almost like a reality show! I'll probably replace him, indeed.

And yes, I wouldn't include Black Widow in my roster because of her NPC role. There's this whole subplot running through the first three chapters where the heroes are trying to figure out if Widow's betraying them; having her playable would then not make any sense.
(Because of the roster limit, I am actually quite happy that several important characters are already featured as NPCs: they don't need to be fitted in anymore!)

Outsider: Poison Ivy seems to me like the odd one out, although I have never read much DC so I don't know too much about the character - does she have a heroic side? Would she be someone to answer Nick Fury's call? There aren't a lot of endangered plants in the game for her to care about...
Your roster overall looks like a nice list of representatives from all sides of both universes, like a Marvel vs Capcom selection (but then DC instead of Capcom). If following up on BaconWizard17's suggestion to ditch Surfer, cosmic Marvel could also be represented by Nova or one of the Guardians.

I haven't read much DC either, as I am huge Marvel fan. Marvel's characters have always been cooler to me. But, I grew up watching some old DC stuff as well, like the old Superman cartoons, the Adam West Batman TV show, the first Batman movie with Michael Keaton, and of course the original Superman movies with the late Christopher Reeve. Still, my childhood has been with Marvel mostly.

Poison Ivy is mainly a Batman villainess, but recently she's been an "anti-hero" teaming with Catwoman and the ever-popular Harley Quinn (also Batman bad girls) as the "Gotham Sirens." But yes, I thought about taking her out for Aquaman since she is an unlikely pick. And meanwhile, I know Silver Surfer appears as an NPC, but my answer to that is just not to pick Surfer in the Skrull stages (the only time he appears as an NPC, fighting Galactus). He's just awesome to play as. Though, if I do take Surfer out, I'd probably replace him with Star-Lord. Man, creating rosters aren't easy...

And talk about not making sense -- when I first found out that they made Dr. Doom playable, I was shocked and asking myself why they would make the game's main antagonist playable... Nightcrawler was an odd choice for them too, considering his unwilling role in Doom's plan.

Most of the added characters made no sense. Colossus, and Colossus were corrupted by Doom, Doom is the main villain, nightcrawler is an npc, moonknight came completely out of the blue, Fury and Black Widow are important story NPCs, etc. But that's sort of Marvel's thing with those games. In X-Men Legends II, you could play as Xavier, Iron Man, Deadpool, Sabretooth, and Pyro, despite the fact that they're key to the story. I can see why they did it though: take the characters out of the roster, and you'll have unhappy fans; take the playables out of their NPC roles and you get a weak story. It's just one of those things that has to be done, whether it makes sense or not.
