Title: X-Men Legends Skin Mega Pack
Post by: BliZZ on February 25, 2007, 11:07AM
Yes, it is true, the long-awaited release is here! Contains every skin from XML1 and XML2 in MUA format, converted by myself and Mr. Chameleon.

Download Now! (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=1L4ZCBFM)

Enjoy! And post any problems (not sure what they could be :P) here.

EDIT: Xtreme Psylocke, Retro Psylocke, and Ultimate Cyclops are NOT included in the pack. darkmythology made bump-mapped versions based on the 'Dark' models, so they would not only be redundant, but lower quality.

Ultimate Cyclops (http://www.box.net/public/jf9zmqpm9g)

Xtreme Psylocke (http://www.box.net/public/l71qem3064)

Retro Psylocke (http://www.box.net/public/mbbl57baal)

For previews, hit the corresponding skin conversion threads (though I will, eventually, crosslink all the images to this thread for ease of use, yesss).
Be aware that the pack is MUA-formatted. If you want the XML2-compatible XML1 models, get the separate releases from the XML subforum.

Hi,

According to the picture, this skin pack looks awesome.
However, I would like to know where I have to install the files exactly.
Thanks in advance for repliers
and sorry for the dumb question ...

Hi,
skins go in the "actors" directory.
As is explained in other threads.

Hi,

I'm new to the whole concept of "modding" so please forgive the "noob" question I'm about to ask.  Does this mod overwrite charecters and their powersets, or does it simply overwrite the existing charecter skins?

Neither.
It's just a very big pack of skins.
No powersets.
No existing files get overwritten, but you wont be able to select any of them in game unless you install powersets etc for them or replace existing skins..

Thanks form you help. If I do understand correctly, to be able to use (for now) those skins, I need to overwrite it with an existinging one ( ex : wolverine related file in the Actors folder ) ?

Yes, pretty much.
These are really more of an excellent resource for Modders than a Mod per se.
But if you want, you can just replace an existing characters skin with them, till Mods for each character are released..

BliZZ has compunctions against using it because darkmythology has bolted the texture (http://marvelmods.com/forum/index.php?topic=100.msg1315#msg1315) onto the MUA hi-res model. Not my fault, honest XD

Alternate TAS Wolverine (from X-Box, supposedly without back problems) and PS2 Xtreme Psylocke for the purists :D

Several skins in action:
(http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v26/ivan_k/Marvel/MUA/XMLinMUA/th_Port2.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v26/ivan_k/Marvel/MUA/XMLinMUA/Port2.jpg)
Advanced Lighting with Shadows on Medium or High makes the XML2 models look gorgeous even despite their lack of normal mapping. Of course, they look a tad crude next to MUA models that do; but they hold their own pretty well nonetheless. Without Advanced Lights, they look pretty much identical (of course, if you discount the Black Splotch Issue, which was the reason for my using the PS2 models as often as possible).

Be very afraid.
The file name is the character name, I'm way too lazy to type out THAT many URL tags again.
The snaps feature ALL the variant skins for these characters that are included in the pack, with the exclusion of Ultimate Cyclops (which is a reskin of Dark Cyclops) and Xtreme and Retro Psylocke (which are reskins of Dark Psylocke), neither of which is my work and all of which can be procured elsewhere on this board.
They are all using their native skeletons (except for Angel, who uses Thor's, and Gambit, who uses Moon Knight's) and no HEROSTAT mods (which is why Scarlet Witch has a fire on her head and Nightcrawler has his swords out on every pic, sorry about that). I DID, however, cover more than 60 skins in there in one sitting :D

You forgot Original Jean  ;D

Also, you don't really have to do this, but it would be nice if you also got snaps of both variants for Blob, Mystique, Avalanche, and Madrox (For ease of reference of course ;))

We certainly did Cyc justice in the pack, didn't we? :P

It was also VERRRY convenient that you alphabetized them left to right. Thanks for that.

EDIT: I'll also add a link to Retro Psylocke (crediting darkmyth, of course) to the first post.

I plan on doing this for every model we've ripped, eventually; except for the lowlife beasties, as I covered all of those and therefore they're all already snapped :D

Next step :D
This duplicates some of the skins shown earlier, but it won't hurt. Much. This finalizes the coverage of the pack, the sole exception being the Megasized enemies (Sentinels) and non-human-mapped enemies (Sugarman and all the animals).

This is how the PS2 XML2 skins hold up against the PC ones. Can you guess which is which?
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v26/ivan_k/Marvel/MUA/CGvsNG/Mag-Neato.jpg
This SO makes me want to re-do the whole megapack it's not even funny.

Aaaaand, sadly enough, the PS2 XML2 models still suffer from the white outline problem. Dazzler is surprisingly present in that version and Sinister is positively gorgeous in high-quality lights.

You know, for all this "OMFG PL4ySt4ti0nz is t3h suk, x-b0kz FTW!11!11", PS2 seems to always have the better textures....  This only serves to reinforce the notion I've always made, Playstation > X-box.

Also, noting the "white line issue", is there a way to instill the pixel cell shading in MUA (weren't the black outlines from the alpha channel anyway?  MUA uses no alpha, so is this the cause of the issues?  The outline is still defined in the model, but it shows up as white instead of black, similar to the white vertical lines I had when reskinning models in DXT3 for MUA...)?  The models will all still look the same (XML2 didn't use true pixel cell shading), just with a black outline.  :runaway:

Is the cape a bolton?  The obvious answer seems to be to bolt another one on, but I'm sure you've already thought of that.

Post by: Noelemahc on April 03, 2007, 05:51AM
Rage, I'll look into the issue of the cell shading. That MIGHT be a solution.

Teancum, the matter is not about the bolton (which it ain't, it's a skin_segment) - Bishop's guns and several other characters' irreplaceable segments can be removed, but can't be adequately replaced.

Okay, two more pics to make your weeping loud enough so as to be heard in Raven Soft's HQ :P
PS2 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v26/ivan_k/Marvel/MUA/CGvsNG/Phun.jpg) and PC (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v26/ivan_k/Marvel/MUA/CGvsNG/NotPhun.jpg). Highest detail and resolution, naturally. This shows how poorly animated Havok's menu stance is (BUT, he DOES have the full in-menu animset of three anims!) and how the double DXT3 compression (first one was the native; second was the one we went through when MUA-ing the XML2 models) kills the texture quality. This is also to show that I am already at work on rebuilding the megapack. My hard drives are bursting at the seams now :D
This is ALSO to show that we've got the mutant bases covered for the DLC, as the PS2 models look pretty damn nice in those advanced lights.

Actually, we've got at least one skin for EACH char, so we have most bases covered.

Havok has a menu stance? Who else, if anyone, has a hidden menu stance? *Prays for Avalanche*

They certainly nerfed Emma's boobs in the PC model, didn't they?

As far as the menu stances go, I can vouche that Shadowcat and Polaris DON'T have them, if that helps.

Can it also be assumed that this removes the 'black dots in Regular Lighting' problem? Or are these still Dxt3 compressed?

PS: Activision is gonna have a hard to getting their heads out of their asses on this one, seeing as the DLC ain't released yet. Which means WE have even LONGER to wait til it comes to us in any form

You don't need wordpad you have to replace skins they are numbered like Iceman is 0801, 0802, 0803, 0804 in the actors folder just rename whatever skin you want to that number thats all.

Title: Re: X-Men Legends Skin Mega Pack
Post by: cvc on April 22, 2007, 12:33PM
Installing new skins.
This is harder on you computer-illiterate types. In general, you download a skin you want to use, find a skin you don't want to use that's in the game, (let's say it is the third skin of the Thing, stored in the file 0503.igb residing in your game's ACTORS folder) BACK IT UP, unpack the downloaded file to a comfortable temporary directory, rename it to 0503.igb and copy the result to your game's ACTORS folder, agreeing to overwrite the existing one. Ta-dah!
BUT adding new skin slots is a whole different ball game which would, for a computer-illiterate, require a FAQ longer than I care to write in one sitting. So, either quit on the idea altogether or wait till our resident experimentators finish their project on making a mod of it. So there.
(tut by Noelemahc) the .igb is just the type of file you will only need to replace the 0503 by overwrite of the old one, if your actors folder is empty you have messed it up so you'll have to reinstall the game than do whats in this post good luck and have fun.its simple copy and paste.

How can your actors folder be empty? @_@
If you installed the game in C drive, then go to:

C:\Program Files\Activision\Marvel - Ultimate Alliance\actors\

Like what cvc said, back-up this folder in case you deleted some files by mistake.

You may also want to check out the "Skin IGB # List" (http://marvelmods.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=25&Itemid=43), which lists which MUA characters the numbers represent.

Aside: This can also be done without looking at that list just by finding the correct 100's and 1000's (and in some cases, 10000's) digits of the IGB file in the actors folder. For example, "01_blade.igb" is saying that (all) 01XX.igb, where X is some number in the range 0 to 9, belongs to skins for Blade the character.

Since Noel seems perma-gone, I'll try and pick up the slack of re-ripping the models in their PS2 versions. For those too lazy/bothered to look a page back, PS2 models look cleaner in-game and lack the bdod (black dots of death). Some models (like Gladiator Blob) are not featured in XML2PS2, so we have to either

a) Use XML2PC models (which may or may not feature bdod) or
b) Use XML1PS2 where they exist (will only have 128x textures, as opposed to 256x that XML2 models have. I'd have to check which are cleaner, but that is a job for another day)

EDIT: For those who don't believe in the power of the PS2 models yet, here: (left = PS2 [which Noel never ripped], right = Xbox [which, like PC, uses mips; thus the quality])

Angel (Horseman, Modern (No Wings)), Avalanche (Modern), Beast (Original, Ultimate, Spacesuit), Blob (Ultimate, Gladiator), Bishop (Modern, AoA, Classic), Colossus (Ultimate (Human), AoA, Spacesuit, Gladiator), Cyclops (Astonishing, Classic, Original, Spacesuit, AoA, Street Gear, Gladiator), White Queen (Modern), Gambit (Modern, Ultimate, AoA, Spacesuit), Iceman (Ultimate (Human)), Juggernaut (Modern, Classic, Classic (No Helmet), AoA), Magneto (Ultimate (No Helmet), AoA), Mystique (Modern), Nightcrawler (Spacesuit, Ultimate, Classic, Modern, AoA), Phoenix (Ultimate (Long Hair), Original, AoA, Gladiator), Pyro (Modern, Gladiator), Rogue (AoA, Ultimate (XML2), Modern), Sabretooth (Classic, Ultimate, AoA), Scarlet Witch (Classic, Gypsy, Modern), Storm (Ultimate (Spiky Hair), AoA), Sunfire (Modern, AoA, and Classic), Toad (Ultimate (Blue), Ultimate (Brown), AoA), Wolverine (AoA)

http://www.momoshare.com/file.php?file=c8db4ba103961f4a8ce08d16c7f58174

Avalanche (Modern), Beast (Spacesuit), Blob (Gladiator), Cyclops (Gladiator), Phoenix (Gladiator), Pyro (Gladiator) all come from XML1PS2, the rest from XML2PS2.

Avalanche (Gladiator), White Queen (Spacesuit & Uncanny), Iceman (Ultimate), Jubilee (Ultimate), Magma (ALL skins), Mystique (Uncanny), Nightcrawler (Uncanny), Psylocke (Spacesuit), Phoenix (Ultimate (Short Hair)), and Storm (Ultimate (Ponytail)) were already XML1PS2 rips in the pack, so get those there.

I gotta re-skin Dark Phoenix Jean w/ Phoenix Jean, so that will be highest quality. Ultimate Cyc, X-Treme Psylocke, Ult Mags, and DPhoenix are all highest quality in MUA models. Same with Storm 's 042X skins and Wolvy's 032X skins.

Teancum, your list of models that only appear in high-quality in XML2PC (these are only for the 27 specific characters I checked):
Angel (Modern)
Angel (Spacesuit)
Juggernaut (Gladiator)
Quicksilver (Modern)
Toad (Gladiator)
Wolverine (Gladiator)
Wolverine (Retro) [technically, this is XML1XBOX, because XML1PS2 model was rigged improperly, but it still has mips/may have black dots]

Can do, but which costume is Retro Wolvie?  The Animated series one?  I got no problem doing him, just remember it's only a 128x128 texture.
Title: Re: X-Men Legends Skin Mega Pack
Post by: DJay Saint on June 03, 2007, 04:53PM
Yes.  I've already converted him to MUA and uploaded him in one of these threads.  Here (http://www.momoshare.com/file.php?file=f5736661de40c00830a1ae2a0d1b43a7) it is again.

Noel was supposed to rip the PS2 texture from the model so we could slap it on the x-box model, but he never got around to it.  The PC models aren't pixelated because they have mips.  They look like they do because of the DDS compression.  The MUA models look spectacular even though they use mips, part because they have MUCH higher resolution mips, and the compression from the lower resolution mips doesn't affect the model.  The reason PS2 textures look better is because of the weird palette format they are in.  The textures aren't compressed the same way as the x-box and PC models, thus preserving the texture better.  If you slapped a PS2 texture on a PC model, you would never know the difference, regardless of the mips.  I'm pretty sure the black dots from the PC textures are also due to the format they are saved in, i.e. the alpha channels are handled differently with palettes (if palette textures even have an alpha channel) than they are in DXT3.

EDIT:  This is the costume I used the most in MUA, so I can ensure you it does NOT have black dots throughout the texture.  If it does, it's your video card, not the model/texture.  It is, however, pixelated as hell and looks kind of crappy next to the other PC models due to the lower resolution mips.
Title: Re: X-Men Legends Skin Mega Pack
Post by: BliZZ on June 03, 2007, 05:27PM
Actually, mips ARE partially to blame. The Xbox/PC version read certain body parts' textures from the lower quality mips at times, thus the models looking somewhat pixally (in addition to the compression, of course). The PS2 models all reading SOLELY from a 256 texture result in higher quality around the edges, etc. It is both a function of the mips and the compression.

Speaking of Wolvy, teancum asked for a list, so I gave it to him. The ones that we do actually NEED from that list are Gladiator Wolvy (he was an XML1 boss, and his XML1 texture was colored horribly) and Quicksilver. I HATE Modern Quicksilver's black dots.
Title: Re: X-Men Legends Skin Mega Pack
Post by: Teancum on June 03, 2007, 06:01PM
@ Rage -- Slapping the PS2 texture onto the Xbox model wouldn't work due to the mips.

@ BliZZ -- I'm starting on your list tonight.  I'll keep you posted.
Title: Re: X-Men Legends Skin Mega Pack
Post by: DJay Saint on June 04, 2007, 06:05AM
You wouldn't put the palette texture in, you would save it as a DDS.  The PS2 textures are well preserved, so they would look better than the textures already in the model.
Title: Re: X-Men Legends Skin Mega Pack
Post by: Teancum on June 04, 2007, 06:25AM
Granted, but the reason the Xbox one looks bad is because the largest mip is 128x.  If it was a 256 model it wouldn't look so rough.  I don't think we can just inject a 256 texture w/hex editing, but color me happy if someone finds out how.

2. Pick a skin you want to replace in MUA. (You may want to read >>this<< (http://marvelmods.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=25&Itemid=43))
3. Rename the skin from skin pack with the name of the skin you want to replace in MUA.

Angel (Horseman, Modern (No Wings)), Avalanche (Modern), Beast (Original, Ultimate, Spacesuit), Blob (Ultimate, Gladiator), Bishop (Modern, AoA, Classic), Colossus (Ultimate (Human), AoA, Spacesuit, Gladiator), Cyclops (Astonishing, Classic, Original, Spacesuit, AoA, Street Gear, Gladiator), White Queen (Modern), Gambit (Modern, Ultimate, AoA, Spacesuit), Iceman (Ultimate (Human)), Juggernaut (Modern, Classic, Classic (No Helmet), AoA), Magneto (Ultimate (No Helmet), AoA), Mystique (Modern), Nightcrawler (Spacesuit, Ultimate, Classic, Modern, AoA), Phoenix (Ultimate (Long Hair), Original, AoA, Gladiator), Pyro (Modern, Gladiator), Rogue (AoA, Ultimate (XML2), Modern), Sabretooth (Classic, Ultimate, AoA), Scarlet Witch (Classic, Gypsy, Modern), Storm (Ultimate (Spiky Hair), AoA), Sunfire (Modern, AoA, and Classic), Toad (Ultimate (Blue), Ultimate (Brown), AoA), Wolverine (AoA)

http://www.momoshare.com/file.php?file=c8db4ba103961f4a8ce08d16c7f58174

Avalanche (Modern), Beast (Spacesuit), Blob (Gladiator), Cyclops (Gladiator), Phoenix (Gladiator), Pyro (Gladiator) all come from XML1PS2, the rest from XML2PS2.

Avalanche (Gladiator), White Queen (Spacesuit & Uncanny), Iceman (Ultimate), Jubilee (Ultimate), Magma (ALL skins), Mystique (Uncanny), Nightcrawler (Uncanny), Psylocke (Spacesuit), Phoenix (Ultimate (Short Hair)), and Storm (Ultimate (Ponytail)) were already XML1PS2 rips in the pack, so get those there.

I gotta re-skin Dark Phoenix Jean w/ Phoenix Jean, so that will be highest quality. Ultimate Cyc, X-Treme Psylocke, Ult Mags, and DPhoenix are all highest quality in MUA models. Same with Storm 's 042X skins and Wolvy's 032X skins.

Teancum, your list of models that only appear in high-quality in XML2PC (these are only for the 27 specific characters I checked):
Angel (Modern)
Angel (Spacesuit)
Juggernaut (Gladiator)
Quicksilver (Modern)
Toad (Gladiator)
Wolverine (Gladiator)
Wolverine (Retro) [technically, this is XML1XBOX, because XML1PS2 model was rigged improperly, but it still has mips/may have black dots]

I think that you may have to disable your Popup blocker if you have one.  If it is anything like momoshare I also have to disable my Norton personal firewall while downloading.  Just be sure to turn it back on.

Is there any way to add this pack to an X-Box 360?
I'd love to play some of these characters!!  (I may never leeave home!!)

No one here knows how to mod a XBOX360 here IIRC. Besides, I don't think the skins are fully compatible with XBOX 360 though the skins can be re-done with the existing models in the XBOX360 of course.

Message for Noelemahc,
You presented a photo comparing the contrast between XBOX360 asd PS3 using the White Queen character, and she's not in the XBOX Game!!  How did you get her in there?

All the threads seem to talk about modifying the PC game, and I've even seen comments that "No one here knows how to mod a XBOX360", although I'd LOVE to... there are so many characters in this thread that I'd love to play!

When people talk about "slapping the PS2 Texture on the XBOX Model, are they really just porting bnoth models over to the PC and playing them there?  Is it really true that NONE of these mods can be applied to an XBOX?

That is not XBOX360. :morph:
That is the PC version with advanced lighting and other options turned on. Those videos and screenshot you have seen in this forum are way more low-definition than XBOX360 is because some people choose not to use advanced lighting due the constraint of their graphics cards or simply personal preferences. Those 2 pics Noelemahc posted were meant to be comparison and contrast betweeen a model from the PC version of XML2 and the PS2 version of XML2 in MUA. Not only the XBOX360 have advanced lighting...

Both PS2 models and XBOX models work on the PC version, but PS2 models seem to be higher quality than XBOX models. I think the comment about "slapping the PS2 Texture on the XBOX Model" was just saying that putting the PS2 texture on the XBOX model would look better than the original XBOX model. This is because the DXT3 compression really toned down the quality of the textures.

QuoteIs it really true that NONE of these mods can be applied to an XBOX?

Um...what? Did you read this thread?
http://marvelmods.com/forum/index.php?topic=259.0
It does have a few custom mods in it in addition to Moon Knight and Colossus...

Also, I have converted everything people needed to built a Toxin mod for their XBOX/PS2. It's a start.

Thanks iammingy, I appreciate the lead!

I know nothing about mod'ing and hacking, but I'm so intrigued by using the new characters that I'm willing to give it a try.  I should probably point to the detail... I'm using an XBox360, and not an XBox, so I imagine that there's still more work to do.

Hey thanks for the mega pack, I downloaded it and I was successful installing the Emma Frost skin that resembles the astonishing one (skin number 1 in this picture http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v26/ivan_k/Marvel/MUA/Megapak/Frost.jpg) but when I was playing and I use the diamond form power of Emma, the skin was cancelled and appear the original astonishing skin but the worst part was when I deactivate the diamond form and Emma appear as a skrull!!!!!
So I tough that I need to change the code of her powers and change her original skins for the new ones but I don't find a diamond skin version for the skin in this pack, so my question is, There are plans for making a diamond version for that skin? If the answer is no, how can I change the skins in the code in order to be able to clear the original skin (normal and diamond)and put the new one?

Thanks for reading!

Yes, you have to hex edit the skin.
Matt710 already did that, search for his released skins he has that skin available and ready to use :)
