I think Magneto's also been said to be able to block psychic energy without his helmet, at least in the comics,  due to some unknown reason.. Also I found it interesting to note that Jean was able to affect Jugg's through his helmet twice (once as Marvel Girl in the 60s, and once in Morrison's Run).
